Today we’d like to introduce you to Misael Ramos.
Hi Misael, so excited to have you on the platform. So before we get into questions about your work-life, maybe you can bring our readers up to speed on your story and how you got to where you are today?
I’m originally from Dallas and I moved to Austin back in 2005. My family was low-income so I waited tables while attending ACC. I got my degree from Texas State and went on to become a Foreclosure Prevention Specialist where I traveled the country helping families mitigate foreclosure during the Great Recession. I’m now a Business Analyst Manager at Indeed, so I partner with stakeholders and I solve their problems at scale. Outside of my day job, I’m the President of The Blackland Community Development Corporation where we develop and maintain affordable housing for the missing middle-income and below. I also work on anti-displacement efforts at the city in a coalition with other organizations, am a member of N.C.I.N.C helping to stop the expansion of I-35, and am an advocate for the preservation of East Austin communities.
I’m sure you wouldn’t say it’s been obstacle free, but so far would you say the journey has been a fairly smooth road?
It has not been a smooth ride, especially the first few years of my life. After my mom had my younger brother, we would have to go sit in line at the food pantry and get a bag of groceries that would have to last us however long. These times have always been a reminder to me of where I come from. It’s what fuels my passion for working with low-income families because I get the struggle of deciding if you’re going to pump gas or not pay the electric bill that month.
As you know, we’re big fans of you and your work. For our readers who might not be as familiar what can you tell them about what you do?
Currently, I do Business Analytics for Indeed (the company that gets people jobs). My team basically solves problems all day so I’m a natural at figuring out an issue, putting a plan in place, and driving the work towards a solution. I’ve taken these skills and have applied them to my community work as well. Also at Indeed, I’m the Community Engagement Lead for the Black Inclusion Group. In this role I work with external partners like Huston-Tillotson and non-profits. We collaborate with these organizations to put host events, create programs for folks needing work, and connect them with resources Indeed offers. I’m truly grateful to have the energy to do both community work while at my day job and outside of it too.
What’s next?
Overall, I’m looking forward to continuing to push for equity not only in the tech industry but all of Austin as well. I enjoy connecting with people and helping them achieve their dreams while also mentoring people that look like me too. I’m interested in local politics and recently launched a campaign for City Council in East Austin’s District 1 so I’m looking forward to increasing my involvement at the city level too. I’ve also been working on an idea to help first time entrepreneurs gain a bigger online footprint so they can reach more consumers. I’m very excited for the future!
