Check Out Andy Martinec’s Story

Today we’d like to introduce you to Andy Martinec.

Alright, thank you for sharing your story and insight with our readers. To kick things off, how did you get started?
I was running a brewpub in Austin called Black Star Co-op when I decided to start a brewery side project. I want to focus on lagers, and since there is a large Czech population(myself included) in Bell County, I chose to make Czech-style lagers my priority. I initially opened a tiny brewery in my family’s BBQ restaurant that had been in Temple for 53 years, and I am now here full-time, looking to expand operations.

Can you talk to us about the challenges and lessons you’ve learned along the way? Would you say it’s been easy or smooth in retrospect?
Not smoothly, but I started this brewery as simply as possible to test the market. As I grew and needed more space/equipment, it became more challenging with what I hoped to do.

As you know, we’re big fans of you and your work. What can you tell our readers who might need to be more familiar with what you do?
I now focus on Czech-style lagers, but I worked at Black Star Co-op in Austin for almost 10 years, brewing every style under the sun. During my time there, we won a gold medal at the Great American Beer Festival in 2015, as well as 2 gold medals and Brewery Of The Year at the inaugural Texas Craft Brewers Cup in 2022. At Tanglefoot, I am excited to grow this brand as a go-to local lager.

Have you learned any interesting or important lessons due to the Covid-19 Crisis?
Too many to count; always be flexible. It takes 3 times the effort to get half the results during tough times.
