Meet Amy Smith of Round Rock

Today we’d like to introduce you to Amy Smith.

Hi Amy, we’d love for you to start by introducing yourself.
I am the owner and General Manager of Monster Mini Golf in Round Rock. My family started our business in September 2017, inspired by our oldest son’s love of mini-golf. My son has autism, and whenever we went anywhere new, we played mini-golf to help “break the ice,” as anything new was typically harder for those on the spectrum. When my family moved to Round Rock in 2013, we tried to find a good, local Mini-Golf place and couldn’t find one. In 2017 we decided to open Monster Mini Golf, to bring another wonderful family establishment to the town we love. In 2021, I took over Round the Rock as the owner and editor-in-chief. Round the Rock is a local event and entertainment website. Round Rock is the place we chose to raise our sons, we love it here, and I wanted to help connect the people of this great town with all of the entertainment and fun it provides.

We all face challenges, but would you describe it as a relatively smooth road?
I suffer from Lupus SLE, so having a chronic health condition has always been complicated while raising a special needs family, teaching special education (my former profession), and owning a business. However, the Covid years proved to be the toughest. It was a scary time for our business, as we had to close for 2 solid months and open up very slowly again. I had to be extremely careful with my health during this time, which made running the business even more challenging. But we persevered, and through many heartaches, hard times, and sleepless nights I’m happy to say Monster is thriving today.

Thanks for sharing that. So, you could tell us a bit more about your work.
I am incredibly proud of what we have built Monster into. We wanted to open a fun environment where families could spend time together and make memories to last a lifetime. We love our Crew and are proud to give our local teens a safe, rewarding start to their professional careers. Nothing makes me happier than to see them go off into the world or just to college and then come back to see us, whether working on breaks or just coming in for fun. We adore being that second home. Making memories for people is a wonderful way to live, and I get to play with Monsters and act silly all day; how can you beat that? Hearing a little kid say, “wow!” as soon as they open our door never fails to make me beam from ear to ear.

What changes are you expecting over the next 5-10 years?
Our company is growing along with our surrounding areas. We will continue adding and improving all that Monster offers to keep our regulars entertained with exciting activities and to bring in new guests.
