Meet Katie Mark of Settled In Soundly

Today we’d like to introduce you to Katie Mark.

Hi Katie, we’re thrilled to have a chance to learn your story today. So, before we get into specifics, let’s briefly walk us through how you got to where you are today.
The common theme in my story is a love for houses and what makes them homes. I have always been interested in design details and chose to study architecture and architectural engineering at UT Austin. After graduation, I moved to Los Angeles to work as a façade engineer for an international design firm. During the pandemic, I realized engineering was no longer a good fit, and I started looking for things I would enjoy doing for the sake of doing them, which genuinely brought me joy. I thought back to what I loved doing as a kid such as working on puzzles, color-coding my school supplies, and shopping at The Container Store with my mom. I realized professional organizing could be a great fit. How many 6-year-olds like to shop at The Container Store?! I connected with the local professional organizing community and started working part-time as a home organizer. When my husband and I moved back to Austin, I started my own company. It’s called Settled In Soundly because that’s how I want clients to feel when our work is complete.

You wouldn’t say it’s been obstacle-free, but so far would you say the journey has been smooth?
Owning a business is a new adventure, so my struggles are similar to many entrepreneurs starting – mainly getting the word out about what we do and how we help clients. I was nervous about making the career change because of all the time and energy I had invested in my engineering career. It was a very technical role, but I’ve been pleasantly surprised by how well my skills have transferred. In particular, my expertise in 3D modeling software has added value by inspiring clients and showing them the potential of their spaces.

As you know, we’re big fans of Settled In Soundly. What can you tell our readers who might need to be more familiar with the brand?
We believe organizing has the power to transform not only spaces, but also lives, and we love being a partner on the journey! We feel fortunate to be professional organizers because clients tell us we bring them relief from feeling overwhelmed by their cluttered spaces. Our approach to organizing is focused on finding the best solution for each unique client and their house. We’ll listen to your goals, get to know what works for you and what doesn’t, then create a beautiful and functional organization system custom designed just for you.

Our professional home organizing services are great for busy professionals and parents who want to declutter and organize, but are overwhelmed by where or how to start. We guide them through the process with a personalized plan specific to their house and lifestyle so they can feel confident in tackling the project at hand. We offer hands-on support throughout the design, product selection, and organizing phases.

For people moving to or within Austin, we offer unpacking and organizing services to relieve the stress of moving and help clients settle into their new house quickly. In addition to unpacking boxes and finding a new home for everything inside them, we focus on small details like custom labels and shelf liner. Our goal is for homeowners to feel at peace in their homes from the start.

Let’s talk about our city – what do you love? What do you not love?
I love the green spaces and amazing food in Austin. Living outside of Texas for the past few years has given me a special appreciation for the BBQ and Tex-Mex here! I don’t love the traffic, but who does?
