Community Highlights: Meet Gabriela Mata of The Art of Social Media

Today we’d like to introduce you to Gabriela Mata.

Hi Gabriela, we’d love for you to start by introducing yourself.
Howdy! I am Gabriela 🙂 As some would say, I was born and raised in Austin, TX, a unicorn. As a little girl, I always found myself drawn to art class. I loved the fact that I could create anything and everything. Fast forward to high school, I ended up going to a state competition for my colored pencil drawing of my mom’s wiener dog (I was so beyond thrilled I reached this point). I scored high on my piece and ended up getting a medal. Right after the competition, I started my first job at 17 at Claire’s. There I was allowed to be in charge of the store’s Instagram. I went all out and eventually had many photoshoots of the products and my friends modeling in them. Towards the end of high school, I had to think about what I wanted to go to school for; I ended up choosing to advertise because I could use my artistic abilities to make ads, posts, etc., the fact I was allowed to handle the Claire’s Instagram made me realize how much I loved creating posts for it and also was a major factor in choosing advertising as my career.

I went to acc to get basics out of the way, attended the University of Texas at Arlington (online), and studied advertising. In 2021, I decided to play it risky and offer my social media services in an Instagram reel on my IG. I doubt I get any clients, but I ended up getting a client shortly after, Plaza las Rosas, a local pop-up market here in Austin.

We all face challenges, but looking back, would you describe it as a relatively smooth road?
It has not been a smooth road, but it’s worth it. I’ve had clients that have disrespected me, made me cry, and ghosted me. For example, I had what I thought was an amazing client, but over time they started disrespecting me, saying my work wasn’t good enough. I tried to push through, and I did, but this client made me cry and feel on edge when I was creating content and posts. I was starting not to enjoy my job because I felt on edge with everything I was creating for them; every little thing they would criticize in a very disrespectful/mean manner. I no longer work with this client. But all that was a big lesson for me. I learned that not every client is a perfect fit, and that’s ok.

Before we let you go, we’ve got to ask if you have any advice for those just starting.
Start now! Whatever your dream is, whether it’s to create a social agency or start streaming online, whatever it may be, start now. Something that used to hold me back was this. I used to think everything needed to be perfect before I could start, but the thing is, I’m not perfect, and nothing is ever going to be perfect anyways, so why am I letting it hold me back? I stopped letting it and started creating my dreams into reality. So whatever is holding you back, don’t let it and start now.
