Today we’d like to introduce you to Nicole Peebles.
Hi Nicole, we’d love for you to start by introducing yourself.
I started sewing early and have always been in tune with my creative side. My mother was the first person to teach me to sew. I don’t know who remembers the “My First Sewing Book” books with the chick on the front, but that’s the first thing I ever made. Throughout the years, I have had many more amazing women help me with my sewing journey, but for the most part, I’m self-taught. When I went to college, I wasn’t confident that I had what it “took” to be a fashion designer, so I did the next best thing and went to school for the business side of things. However, what helped me take off with sewing was someone I met after college and all that free time I had early on during the pandemic. The name Cecelia & Mae comes from my grandmothers, who were always fashionable and inspired me. I still have a lot to learn, and you can never stop learning, but looking back, I’m proud that I never gave up as I’ve come such a long way, and it’s probably my biggest passion now.
You wouldn’t say it’s been obstacle free, but so far would you say the journey has been a fairly smooth road?
As I said, I specifically didn’t get my degree in fashion design because I didn’t think I’d ever be that great at sewing. With most things, there’s a learning curve. Not being afraid to mess up, asking for help, and being patient with myself has been the key to where I am now – and of course, lots of practice! I also changed what I was doing. I had an idea in my head for a long time of making apparel, but then one day, I had this great idea for a handbag, and I just started focusing on that. One day I’d love to have an apparel line, which I’m working towards, but starting with something that ended up being more attainable did wonders for me. Many creatives also know the struggle of sometimes not feeling like you have enough time for your craft or getting stuck or burnt out. I try not to put pressure on myself right now, as it’s not my full-time gig, and remember that I do it because I love it.
Thanks for sharing that. Can you tell us more about your work next?
Cecelia & Mae is a line of handmade goods focusing on reuse. My specialty is purses, fanny packs, tote bags, etc. As most of us know, the fashion industry has a large environmental impact. I love saving vintage or preloved textiles and turning them into something new that can be used and loved again. I make most of my purse designs which I’m proud of. Most of the time, I only have enough fabric for one item, so you’re truly getting a one-of-a-kind piece of art.
Who else deserves credit for your story?
My mother for getting me into sewing, my grandmothers for inspiration, my third-grade teacher for helping me make my first piece of clothing, Sparky for making me believe I could be good at sewing, my sister for always supporting me, all the wonderful people I’ve met at markets, and many others, including a lot of YouTubers who I’ve learned from!
