Today we’d like to introduce you to RFM RICHITO.
Hi RFM RICHITO, can you start by introducing yourself? We’d love to learn more about how you got to where you are today.
I have been in the music and entertainment industry since 2006, but I have been fascinated with the music culture since childhood. I can remember, at the age of 5, my mom taking me to six flags and me begging her to let me do Karaoke. I picked Kriss Kross’s “Jump” as the song because it was my favorite kid group then. She thought I would be shy and not follow through with it, but once I got in the booth, I immediately turned from this shy, reserved kid to a seasoned performer, and at that point, she knew I had a musical gift. I started to write my songs and every chance I got. I would sneak in a chance to rap and dance in front of their friends at house parties, lol. After graduating high school, I moved back to Houston, my birth city, where I attended the University of Houston. I would go on to enter talent shows, and it turned from a hobby to a dream. I started making mixtapes that caught the attention of an older cousin who was already part of the legendary Houston movement Swisha House formed by DJ Michael Watts. I became my first manager in 2008 and started making a name for myself. I went on to win several music showcases, even the best rap song category of the Akademia Awards in California. From there, I started my label entitled RichFellaMuzik Records and learned about the music business and what it took to get paid for my music through shows and streaming sales. I have been working on a clothing/shoe brand and my EP, entitled “The Child Of A King,” and building relationships and connections to boost my visibility throughout Texas.
You wouldn’t say it’s been obstacle free, but so far would you say the journey has been a fairly smooth road?
It has been a rocky road along the way. It’s not easy, but when you love something so much, you don’t let anything get in the way. My main struggle has been finding the money to invest in my career. I didn’t grow up rich but was raised to hustle for what I wanted. I learned that you have to start small, make the most out of what you have, and improvise. This allowed me to stay motivated and focused on the journey rather than the immediate results. My only struggle was learning how to choose the right people to do business with. In this music business, I learned quickly that it’s very important to trust only some people you meet so easily and understand that the company you choose to be around can make or break your career.
Let’s switch gears a bit and talk business. What should we know about your work?
As of today, I am an artist and a great songwriter. I specialize in making heartfelt music based on real-life experience. I am most proud of my ability to make music that knows. I like to make music that allows people to have fun and teaches them the consequences of their actions and the other side of the coin. Most artists today only tell one side of the coin. I’m not saying it’s the wrong way because I understand it’s a part of making money and being successful. Still, it can be misleading for the younger generation, who must learn to differentiate reality from entertainment. I’m most known for rapping about real-life situations and not being afraid to take risks. I currently have songs such as “Fake Smiles,” “Blue Hearted,” “Kiss No Tell,” & “Please Forgive Me” that are all available on iTunes, Apple Music, Spotify, etc. The thing that sets me apart is that I am a student of hiphop and have my creative sound.
Let’s end by discussing what matters most to you and why.
I would have to say God & Family matters the most to me. I strongly believe that without God & Family in your everyday life, you can never be happy or get through the dark times everyone must go through to get where you want to be. There were times when I was at my highest, and I felt like I was on top of the world, but at my lowest, I relied on people I considered friends to be there for me, which showed me how putting your trust in the wrong people can destroy your psyche. They turned their backs on me as soon as things got rough, which taught me a lot. Throughout my journey, I have battled anxiety and depression and even felt like giving up, but throughout my ups and downs, God & family never left my side. So yeah, God & Family is all that matters.
