Today we’d like to introduce you to Joudy.
Hello Joudy, thanks for joining us today. We’d love for you to start by introducing yourself.
Joudy’s story is one of resilience and innovation. Born out of a tumultuous political climate in Venezuela, we started the band when we were very young and were forced to flee our homeland at the height of our initial success in South America. After a challenging separation, upon arriving in New York City, we faced the daunting task of adapting to a new culture while continuing to hone our craft and reinvent the sound as a three-piece (the band was originally five members). Despite these challenges, we’ve become a real part of the community of rock bands in NYC, encouraging us to take our expression’s raw and expressive elements further. Our journey has been a testament to the transformative power of music and a lesson in perseverance.
You wouldn’t say it’s been obstacle free, but so far would you say the journey has been a fairly smooth road?
It was daunting at first. Starting as strangers without connections or friends in the music industry was very hard; we had to build relationships from the ground up. One of the biggest hurdles we faced was the language barrier; as non-native English speakers, we struggled to connect with people in the music scenes on a deeper level.
We have always been a self-produced project, so we’ve gotten serious about producing audio and video content over the years. The real artistic exchange started to flow when we collaborated, recording live sessions for other bands. We met many amazing people this way, many of whom have opened doors for us.
We’re proud to have overcome the odds and made a name for Joudy in such a competitive music scene with so much talent. Nowadays, we find ourselves surrounded by an amazing community, signed with one of the coolest labels here in New York (Trash Casual), and having opportunities to play cool festivals (most recently, SXSW in Austin!). We finally feel at home, and at this point, we have made amazing friends and beautiful connections.
Let’s switch gears a bit and talk business. What should we know about your work?
Joudy is a heavy psych band from Venezuela. Our unique sound synthesizes dissonant guitars, dark melodies, and hypnotic rhythms into a sound that is both austere and lush, combined with an introspective and esoterically dense lyricism that has become our signature. Something that sets us apart is how we have combined Venezuelan folklore music into heavy psych rock, using different tempo signatures and a different way to mark tempos on guitar rhythms and solos. They all come from Venezuelan “Llaneras,” some Venezuelan folk. Something we are known for is explosives performances.
What matters most to you? Why?
That matters. Being surrounded by the people you truly connect with on a deeper level. Being surrounded by conscious relationships will provide us with the encouragement, inspiration, understanding, and acceptance needed to motivate each other to overcome challenges, pursue our goals, and improve our overall well-being. These positive affirmations can help build self-confidence, foster better relationships, and promote personal growth.
