Meet Aastha Kumari Karki

Today we’d like to introduce you to Aastha Kumari Karki.

Hi Aastha Kumari; we appreciate you taking the time to share your story with us today. Where does your story begin?
Born and raised in Nepal, my passion for music and the arts was inspired by my parents, who were musicians. Despite my love for creativity, I felt unfulfilled and left for the US at 18. Surviving was hard, and I had to take on odd jobs, going little time for my passions. But in Austin, I found a community and used my voice and art to create positive change while serving my community as a language justice advocate.

I’m sure you wouldn’t say it’s been obstacle free, but so far would you say the journey has been fairly smooth?
Moving to the US alone was difficult, and I faced many challenges. Making ends meet was tough, and I had to take on multiple jobs to survive, leaving little time for my creative pursuits. Sadly, my mother passed away, and the immigration process was complicated, causing me much stress and worry. I also suffered from depression and loneliness as I adjusted to a new culture and tried to make a life for myself in a foreign country. Over time, I found support in my community and started to build a new life in the US. Although the road has not been smooth, every challenge has made me stronger and more resilient, and I am grateful for the experiences that have brought me to where I am today.

Thanks – so, what else should our readers know about your work and what you’re currently focused on?
As a multi-disciplinary artist, I specialize in various art forms that allow me to express my view of the world. Music has been a part of my life since I was 12, but I have also delved into other mediums, such as painting, drawing, and writing. My passion for these different art forms allows me to explore and convey different aspects of my imagination and emotions. Currently, I am focused on surreal, dream-like art that creates a sense of wonder and mystery in the viewer. My art is inspired by my experiences and the world around me, and I am proud of the unique perspective that I bring to my work. My ability to blend different mediums and create a cohesive piece that tells a story sets me apart from others. Art should be more than just visually pleasing. It should also convey a message or emotion.

What quality or characteristic do you feel is most important to your success?
Patience, Persistence, Discipline, Authenticity, and Curiosity
