Today we’d like to introduce you to Olin Petke.
Hi Olin, thanks for sharing your story with us. To start, you could tell our readers some of your backstory.
I was born and raised in Reno, Nevada. I developed a dream to move to Texas when I was 5 years old after I watched my first Dallas Cowboys game. It was a dream I figured would fade, but as I got older, I couldn’t stop thinking about making a move to Texas. Now that I am here, I only regrate it took so long to get here. I met My wife Jacqueline (owner of Class Act Salon in Taylor) here in Austin. Jacqueline and I use to go on exploration dates to different candy stores and we developed a dream to open our own version of a candy store. Reliving our childhoods through candy. When the opportunity came up to open our dream shop, we pitched the idea to the owners of Old Taylor High. Through negotiations we discovered there was an opportunity to buy The Chemistry Lab and combine their ice cream with our candy dreams.
Alright, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
Since we opened right before the winter started, we did have a few tough months right off the bat; However, the clouds have parted, and everyone is loving the new and improved shop.
Great, so let’s talk business. Can you tell our readers more about what you do and what you think sets you apart from others?
We make ice cream from scratch; we have 6 coconut milk bases. Sorbet and 3 different yogurts cover you if you are Vegan, Gluten Free, or diabetic; we offer sugar-free. Since we make all our ice creams to order, you can get any custom milkshake your heart desires. We also offer several different nostalgic sodas so you can get as creative as you want with your ice cream floats. For candy, we offer bulk candy, nostalgic candy, several Liquor candies, and a collection of Nostalgic sodas and Aimie-themed energy drinks. We do chocolate dipping in-house and even make our Chocolate bars. We make several Fudge’s in-house and offer 6-7 different homemade fudge options.
In terms of your work and the industry, what are some changes you expect to see over the next five to ten years?
We are experimenting with creating our soda recipes as a possible addition to our shop in the future.
