Check Out Kat Teutsch’s Story

Today we’d like to introduce you to Kat Teutsch.

Hi Kat, please kick things off for us with an introduction to yourself and your story.
I started back into ceramics in 2014 when my cat, Isis, died. I wanted to make her urn. So in my free time from my real job as a commercial photographer in NYC www.katteutsch.com, I started a ceramics class in Brooklyn and fell back in love with something I had done in college. I made so much stuff and had nowhere to put it that my prop stylist friend, Karin Olsen suggested I start selling them. So I did, and they took off after Nigella Lawson re-gram something, and I was published in Better Homes and Gardens 2016 Style Makers issue. Unfortunately, in 2017/2018, I suffered an injury. My photo career was so busy I had to put making on the back burner, but after some tragic things in my life in 2018, I decided to pick up and move back to Austin, TX and get a 1,000 sq ft studio and start making again full time. Unfortunately, the pandemic fell upon us, and I lost my studio in 2020 and haven’t been in one since. I can make my earrings in my apartment, but I’m still looking for a space to make my ceramics and do portrait work and stills as well. I’m working on a new site with Shopify, and it’s almost done, and I’m so excited! I also just had my first pop-up shop with The Front Market in Austin and looking at others to do.

Would you say it’s been a smooth road, and if not, what are some of the biggest challenges you’ve faced along the way?
My obstacles in the ceramic world have been continuously getting hurt. That has caused me to take breaks to restrengthen what has been hurt. My biggest struggle in Austin is finding an affordable studio space. I shared a space when I first got here but found out it was an illegal sublet during the pandemic. I’d love to get into a shared space and join a community again.

As you know, we’re big fans of you and your work. What can you tell our readers who might need to be more familiar with what you do?
I’m a food, stills, and interior photographer, having shot the covers and stories for major magazine brands, catalogs, and ads. I’ve been a photographer for 30 years, and I love it. It keeps me going every time I pick up a camera. I’m also a ceramicist, working part-time since 2015 and full-time since 2019. I specialize in functional tableware and earrings. Each piece is hand-made by me and stamped with my cat’s face, and my pieces have graced the covers, pages, and ads of national and international magazines, blogs, and cookbooks!
