Rising Stars: Meet David Charles

Today we’d like to introduce you to David Charles.

David Charles

Hi David, thanks for sharing your story with us. To start, you could tell our readers some of your backstory.
Initially, I embarked on my professional journey in productized e-commerce as a media buyer. My experiences encompassed a diverse range of products and brands I launched during this time. Throughout this journey, I was privileged to forge strong, enduring relationships with remarkable people. These connections were built upon trust, perseverance, shared experiences, and mutual respect. I attribute my success to a blend of relentless hard work and the invaluable network of relationships I’ve cultivated. As the Navy Seals wisely put it, “luck is the residue of design,” I firmly believe in the profound truth behind this statement. Fast forward many years and countless hours of grind-work, I find myself at the helm of a 150-person company that has acquired over 300,000 customers in its first 14 months.

Would it have been a smooth road, and if not, what are some of the biggest challenges you’ve faced along the way?
Far from smooth, my journey has been marked by numerous setbacks, failures, and moments of financial uncertainty where even paying rent became a concern. I’ll forever be grateful to a supportive former girlfriend who supported me and was a good sport about date night, meaning a home-cooked meal during those challenging times. The stress and pressure I encountered were beyond anything I could have imagined. However, it’s important to note that this journey has primarily been characterized by continuous learning, personal growth, and a willingness to take bold risks.

Thanks – so, what else should our readers know about your work and what you’re currently focused on?
I proudly hold the position of CEO and Co-Founder at Mood (hellomood.co). Over the past 12 months, we have established ourselves as one of the top 10, if not the top 5, fastest-growing USA e-commerce companies. Today, my role revolves around overseeing our executive team of six while delving deeper into specific projects when my insights can make a difference. What I’m most proud of, however, is our exceptional team. We operate efficiently, foster empathy, and cultivate a culture encouraging constructive challenges and healthy debate to make the best decisions. My most distinguishing quality as an operator is my unwavering tenacity—I do not give up.

We’d love to hear about your fond memories from growing up. Do you have any advice for finding a mentor or networking in general? What has worked well for you?
Put yourself out there, read books, and attend industry events. Contact people directly through LinkedIn or ask your current contacts to make an intro. You need to be bold! If you’re going to be a successful CEO, you have to understand all facets of the business. Learn from people older and younger than you. Ask questions. Stay curious and help others – do good in the world, expand your network, and others will want to assist you.
