Check Out Cornelia Gordon’s Story

Today we’d like to introduce you to Cornelia Gordon.

Cornelia Gordon

Hi Cornelia, can you start by introducing yourself? We’d love to learn more about how you got to where you are today.
The first time I wrote a song, I was 12 years old and still living in Jamaica. I would always be in class writing raps. When I was 14, we migrated to America, and I downloaded Audacity software to learn how to mix my music. I wrote songs throughout high school and even did a performance that went horribly because I had stage fright, but I love making music and the idea of sharing it with the world, so nothing could deter me from creating. I pride myself on making music from the heart and music that people can relate to. The first time I went to a studio to record my music was in 2019, when I released my first music video for my single “Pray.” Ever since then, I have been releasing music and music videos consistently with no plans of stopping. I do it for the love; everything else is icing on the cake. My most recent project, “Golden Days,” was released on July 14, 2023. It has 10 tracks total, and the topics on the album range from manifesting your reality to falling in love to dealing with the loss of loved ones. The most popular songs on the project so far are “Control,” “Home,” and “Yah Feel Me.”

We all face challenges, but looking back, would you describe it as a relatively smooth road?
For independent artists, there are always many obstacles because we do everything ourselves. Still, the biggest obstacle would be pouring thousands of dollars and hours into your art and barely making any returns. Another obstacle would be to be taken seriously as an artist if you have a massive team behind you.

Let’s switch gears a bit and talk business. What should we know about your work?
I make alternate hip-hop. It is not the type of music you will hear in a club, but it’s more the type of music you would listen to on a 2 a.m. ride around the city or while soaking in the tub after a long day. It is music that people can relate to – from heartbreaks to falling in love again to enjoying the feeling of the sun on your skin and everything in between. I am most proud of the Golden Days album because it was pieced together over two years, so I took my time with it, and I am incredibly proud of the results.

What would you say has been one of the most important lessons you’ve learned?
To avoid taking things personally and to be consistent.
