Today we’d like to introduce you to Scott Rehling. They and their team shared their story with us below:
L2 Productions was founded by Scott Rehling of Austin, TX in 2013. Scott founded Austin-based audio and video production company Lava Studios in 2003 and launched L2 to focus on delivering and innovating live television production and broadcast solutions. With multiple production systems and teams in several regions, L2 handles live production on events throughout the United States in the sports, music, and corporate arena. Our stellar team has produced thousands of live event broadcasts for sports clients such as The American Athletic Conference, The Big 12, The Longhorn Network, ESPN, CBS Sports, Fox Sports, USL Soccer, Major League Rugby, music clients such as Austin City Limits Music Festival and SXSW, and numerous large corporate clients. In 2021, L2 was acquired by the owners of Gamecreek Video, one of the largest and most prestigious live production companies in the United States. It continues to operate as its brand under the Gamecreek umbrella.
It wasn’t obstacle-free, but would you say the journey has been fairly smooth so far?
We have been very fortunate to be in the right place at the right time with a very innovative production solution. We developed a solution for executing live broadcasts remotely from a centralized facility in Austin. We only need cameras, camera operators, and encoders at the venues. The audio and video feeds are sent over IP to our studio facility in Austin, where we execute the rest of the production. This allows us to be very efficient and deliver high-quality broadcasts at a much lower cost than traditional onsite productions. This is something that we developed between 2017 and 2019. During the COVID-19 pandemic, this became a popular and in-demand approach as venues were not allowing large production vehicles and large crews into their buildings. That fostered massive growth for us in 2020-2022. That said, as with any small to mid-sized business, it’s a constant process to maintain and add new clients, and especially with fast growth, there are challenges with finding enough experienced, high-quality people to execute the work at a high-quality level.

Above all, we have developed a very positive, friendly, calm work environment, which is quite the opposite of what you typically find in the high-pressure environment of live production. We employ several people (including myself, who are also Austin-based musicians, which gives us a particularly Austin flavor).

Making a living doing what you love to do with people you love being around while maintaining a healthy balance between work and home/family life.
