Hi Joe, we’re thrilled to have a chance to learn your story today. So, before we get into specifics, let’s briefly walk us through how you got to where you are today.
I’m the Founder of p10 Rating. I envision creating the ‘rate everything’ platform that transforms opinions into valuable rating insights. Have you ever been asked to rate something from 1 to 10? Take something as trivial as someone casually asking for your opinion and make it mean something. P10 unfolded during my final year at University, driven by an exploration into ‘REACT,’ a JavaScript framework. Realizing the significance of REACT, I started to deepen my learning and understanding of it, which led to the creation of the p10 website and the mobile app. Before diving into the tech world, I was an aspiring actor chasing dreams in LA. I dropped out of school to move to LA to pursue an acting career and worked with Eric Morris, one of LA’s top acting coaches. However, the allure of full-time acting faded, leading to a transformative shift back to Austin to study computer science and ultimately become a software engineer. To promote the p10 Rating app, I seamlessly blended my passions by delving into Instagram blogging, looking for the p10s of Austin, my hometown. This has become a way of tying my passion for acting and software engineering. Embrace the beauty of imperfection, whether a perfect 2 or a perfect 10; the essence lies in cherishing ‘the perfect in the imperfect.’ Strive for perfection while celebrating the unique charm found in every nuance of imperfection.
Would it have been a smooth road, and if not, what are some of the biggest challenges you’ve faced along the way?
Crafting the app independently presented an immense hurdle as I assumed the roles of engineer, developer, and marketer. Securing approval from the Apple App Store added an extra complexity, constituting a formidable technical challenge. Beyond the technical intricacies, my endeavor encountered the obstacle of elevating awareness about p10 and bolstering its social media presence. The ultimate challenge emerged as the need to juggle myriad responsibilities. Wearing multiple hats, I find myself immersed in the app’s development and engineering and engaged in quality assurance for both the app and website. The scope extends beyond technical maintenance, encompassing the creation of compelling content to market the app effectively. Striking a balance, I delve into blogging and various facets of business management. Like most entrepreneurs, having multifaceted roles is my most formidable challenge.

My vision is for businesses and individuals to benefit from the convergence of quantifiable and qualitative insights. Whether businesses seek to assess their product appeal or individuals desire ratings for outfits or vacation views, p10 Rating transforms subjective opinions into meaningful ratings. In the p10 app, a user creates an account to create a profile showing an image to be rated. Others can rate the image from 1 to 10. Users can add more images to be rated via ‘dimes,’ a collection of images for further rating. Every rating is made anonymously, leading to a focus more on honesty than reviews or comments.
What has been the most important lesson you’ve learned along your journey?
Embarking on creating the p10 app, I was frequently faced with Murphy’s law – ‘anything that can go wrong, will go wrong.’ Picture this: Late-night coding sessions, countless hurdles, and getting multiple rejections from the Apple App Store. Sleepless nights? Check. Moments of defeat? Absolutely. Yet, amid the chaos, I discovered the power of perseverance. The App Store battles were just the beginning. Soon, I found myself wading into uncharted waters of marketing, a realm I had little experience in. To propel p10 into the limelight, social media has become my stage. I need to post multiple times a day – a testament to the determination that fuels my journey and is a part of the work I enjoy. As Steve Jobs once wisely said, “You can’t connect the dots looking forward; you can only connect them looking backward.” Here, in front of the camera, utilizing skills once honed as an aspiring actor, the dots finally connect. Patience, determination, and steadfastness have been my loyal companions. The skills I acquired to pursue a different dream weren’t wasted. In the intricate tapestry of life, where the past takes an unexpected encore, I’ve learned that you never know when your seemingly unrelated past will become the protagonist of your future. The goal of becoming a working actor may not have materialized, but those skills found a new stage, enriching my journey in ways I couldn’t have foreseen. After all, success has a way of weaving a captivating narrative from the threads of setbacks and unexpected detours.
