Born and raised in Mexico, where I obtaining my law degree, I embarked on a successful career, eventually finding myself working for Citibank. However, life had other plans in store for me.
In 2006, I made the courageous decision to uproot my life and move to the United States with my two young children to support my then-husband’s desire to return to his hometown of Austin, Texas. Little did I know this move would mark the beginning of a remarkable transformation.
Upon arrival, I found myself facing unexpected challenges, including the dissolution of my marriage. With no family support and feeling utterly alone, I embraced the mantra of turning tragedy into triumph. Every tearshed became fuel for building bridges, and every obstacle was an opportunity for growth.
Driven by an unshakeable belief in destiny, I threw myself into the pursuit of a better future for myself and my children. Starting with humble clerical jobs, I worked tirelessly to provide for my family, never losing sight of my dreams.
It was during this time that I discovered my passion for green living, leading me to found Enviromaids Austin, one of the pioneering green cleaning companies in the area. Through dedication and perseverance, Enviromaids flourished, becoming a pillar of sustainability in the community.
But fate had more surprises in store for me. Meeting my current husband, who became my unwavering support system, was the silver lining I never expected. With his encouragement, I ventured into new territory and launched Purrfect Cat Lounge, a sanctuary for rescue cats and a haven for cat lovers alike.
The journey didn’t stop there. Destiny intervened once again, presenting me with the opportunity to revive a beloved neighborhood institution, Irie Bean Coffee Shop, now rebranded as Dear Austin. This venture, rooted in community and nostalgia, symbolizes the interconnectedness of our experiences and the shared love for this vibrant city.
As I get ready to introduce Dear Austin to everyone, I can’t help but feel a little surreal. Sometimes, I have to pinch myself to believe how far I’ve come. I mean, to think, I now have a loving husband, amazing daughters, Aisha and Kamilah, and some incredible friendships. Plus, I’m proud that I’ve been able to create job opportunities for other immigrant women like me, helping them support their families. What can I say? I had a feeling something great was out there for me; I just needed to give it time and keep pushing forward with courage.
Would you say it’s been a smooth road, and if not, what are some of the biggest challenges you’ve faced along the way?
It hasn’t been a smooth journey; it’s been as bumpy as the streets of South Lamar after a week of rain. From overcoming language barriers—despite thinking my English was pretty good when I moved here—to struggling as a single mother with a 6-month-old and a 4-year-old in a new country, holidays became days I dreaded. Moreover, navigating the business world as a woman in what often feels like a man’s domain wasn’t easy either. However, I persevered, earning the trust and respect of my peers and partners. Additionally, facing kidney cancer eight years ago added another layer of difficulty. Despite these challenges, each obstacle I’ve overcome has made me stronger and more prepared for what lies ahead.

When reflecting on the qualities that have shaped my journey and contributed to my success, one characteristic stands out above all: perseverance. In every aspect of my life, whether personal or professional, I’ve encountered obstacles and challenges that could have easily derailed my path. Yet, I keep pushing forward; perseverance has been my constant companion.
But alongside perseverance, commitment has played a pivotal role in shaping my journey. Commitment isn’t just about setting goals; it’s about dedicating myself wholeheartedly to achieving them. It’s about staying true to my values and beliefs, even when faced with temptation or doubt. It’s about showing up every day, ready to put in the hard work and effort required to turn my aspirations into reality.
Intuition has also been a guiding light on my path to success. Trusting my instincts, listening to that inner voice, and allowing intuition to guide my decisions have led me to some of my most significant breakthroughs.
And, of course, passion infuses everything I do. It’s the driving force behind my endeavors, fueling my creativity, igniting my ambition, and inspiring me to give my all in pursuit of my dreams.
