Today we’d like to introduce you to Julia New.
Hi Julia, so excited to have you with us today. What can you tell us about your story?
It all started with being gifted my first maroon Nikon Coolpix digital camera when I was 9. I loved taking pictures of everything and capturing every moment I saw (of course, I was 9, so the obsession slowly faded). Then, when I was 17, I picked up my parent’s Canon when a friend needed senior photos taken. Long story short, that exact camera has not left my hand since!
Now, I have a passion for capturing every moment. Even the details that you didn’t know were worth capturing. I love knowing that when I have my camera in my hand, I have the power to preserve a memory.
In January, I moved from College Station to Austin, and I decided I needed to continue my business in my new city! Round Rock is my new home and I have never been happier to reach new clientele and get connected in a new community!
Would you say it’s been a smooth road, and if not, what are some of the biggest challenges you’ve faced along the way?
Photography is more than an art. I mean, I always thought that photography would come easy to me because I’ve always had an eye for things, being a painter and a naturally crafty person. I tend to have a creative side that takes over when I’m taking pictures. However, with photography, especially if you’re shooting in manual mode, there are so many other things that goes into making a picture look good, not just the angle you’re taking it at. You have to understand different combinations of F stops and shutter speeds, and ISO… All this to create the perfect photo. Learning all of this self-taught and not having taken up photography class before definitely made it a hard road, but it gets smoother every day!
Alright, so let’s switch gears a bit and talk business. What should we know about your work?
I am a photographer. I just love capturing candid moments and getting candid that no one else does. Something that sets me apart is my photos are warm and dark and bring out emotion. I love to capture the motions in the photos, so when you’re looking at them, you can place yourself right in the spot where I’m standing and what is going on between the people I’m capturing.
We’re always looking for the lessons that can be learned in any situation, including tragic ones like the Covid-19 crisis. Are there any lessons you’ve learned that you can share?
I learned a lot about not taking normalcy for granted. Clientele slowed down a lot, and no one wanted to be around anyone. It made it hard for me to capture moments, given that I am primarily an event and wedding photographer.
