Today we’d like to introduce you to Rachel Borgsmiller
Hi Rachel , we’d love for you to start by introducing yourself.
I first started real estate in San Antonio when I was 26. I just had just gotten out of the staffing industry and had no idea what I wanted to be (even after graduating from OU – yes, I know boo-hiss, LOL). But I walked into a Coldwell Banker and asked how Realtors get started and how do they go about getting business. I was totally clueless and I’m sure they could see right through it. But fast forward a couple of months, I was perusing Craigslist (weird, right?) to see if there were any real estate posts about joining a team. And sure enough! I found a Real Partner I position with Coldwell Banker and Brad Graves. I ended up getting the job, but actually started as a Transaction Coordinator because I wasn’t licensed at the time and he needed help. So that’s what I did! For the first 2 years of my career, I worked alongside Brad Graves as his transaction coordinator and literally learned everything there is to know about the contracts that we use on the daily. In the middle of that two years, I ended up getting licensed. I truly believe that all real estate agents should start this way!! Anyway, fast forward to my move to Houston, specifically Sugar Land (and let it be known that after my 2 years with Brad I was SO confident, I legit thought that I had real estate figured out). I reached out to a Broker, Nimesh Patel, Broker/Owner of REMAX Fine Properties and told him that I was ready to conquer the real estate world in Houston and I didn’t want to be on a team, I didn’t need any help, I was about to pave the way myself through Houston real estate. Specifically, I told him that I needed to be on a team for like 6 months (MAYBE) and then I would want to be on my own. His response was “well no one is going to want you on their team for only 6 months, you can’t just use them for 6 months and bounce…. so the only option would be to join my team and then when you’re ready you can be a single agent in the brokerage”. So with ALL MY CONFIDENCE (LOL) I packed my bags and joined “The Fine Realty Group at RE/MAX Fine Properties” with the goal of going off on my own in 6 months. (keep in mind, I have only been in the business for 2 years, just moved to a new city, 28 years old… like what was I thinking?)
2024 – I have been at RE/MAX Fine Properties for 6 years, I am part owner of the team that I started with, although we changed names to The Nimesh Patel Group and I am a Licensed Broker and I NOW live in Austin TX. My role within The Nimesh Patel Group changed many many times. I started as a normal agent on the team for about a year and then figured out that there was a void missing on our team, which was creating a very intentional marketing plan to builders. So I became very focused on new construction and marketing to the sales counselors. Then I became more of manager to the team, focusing on growing our teams knowledge and understanding. From that role, it moved into the opportunity of ownership! So here we are. I moved to Austin in 2022, we expanded The Nimesh Patel Group to Austin as well as the Brokerage, REMAX Fine Properties. There are 4 agents here in Austin on my team and we are always looking to grow! We have a total of 18 agents on the team in both the Austin and Houston market. When I say it’s been a WILD RIDE, whew! It’s been WILD! But you know… what would life be without a wild ride?
Would you say it’s been a smooth road, and if not what are some of the biggest challenges you’ve faced along the way?
No… no it has NOT been a smooth ride!! Not only is real estate just like total chaos (you learn how to manage it but the emotion that can be behind the scenes is not for the weak), but my path has not been easiest either. I was born and raised in OK, I graduated from college in 2014, immediately moved to Dallas, then to San Antonio… so my sphere of friends/family was back in OK and Dallas so getting into real estate in San Antonio, I knew NO ONE, then when I started getting my footing, my life took me to Houston. Again, I knew no one. So I was once again starting over with a career in sales. Which is not easy at all. Luckily I was there for 5 years before I moved to Austin so I made lasting relationships and other agents and met so many good people, so that drastically changed my transition to Austin, but that is not easy to consistently start over. The other hurdle that is always something the younger real estate agents have to overcome is straight up being YOUNG. We are helping people with one of the largest transactions of their lives and they are supposed to trust a 20-something with that. The confidence and knowledge that you have to exude just because of your lack of time on this earth is a struggle and something that even at 33, I still have to overcome. The thing that helps me these days is that I have many many transactions under my belt so I can use those experiences.
As you know, we’re big fans of you and your work. For our readers who might not be as familiar what can you tell them about what you do?
I’m a Realtor by day and a Realtor by night. LOL I have been in Real Estate for over 7 years. I specialize in helping buyers and sellers achieve the American dream. I love helping a great first time homebuyer find a place to settle into. I remember buying my first home and the thought of having something that was my OWN and to make it into whatever I wanted, was such a wonderful feeling so I love a good opportunity to help a first time homebuyer. Although, I have helped buyers at all stages of life and all price points. Helping sellers move onto their next chapter is always a fun opportunity as well. I like to think I’m creative and so helping a seller gives me a creative outlet from a marketing perspective.
I’m not entirely sure what I am known for, maybe my facial expressions? LOL. There have been so many cases that I have been told to fix my face. Which to some degree has bled over into my social media presence. While I don’t have a stupid amount of followers AT ALL, in the RE/MAX system and always shooting videos that lean on the humorous side with Nimesh, we are fairly well-known in RE/MAX for those videos. We have taught social media classes across the US to other RE/MAX agents. It’s been good for our business too because of the referrals that we get!
What sets me apart from other agents in the area is that I really try to become friends with my clients. I want to turn a totally COLD lead into a friendship. I actually pride myself being able to chat with a customer the first time and having that conversation seem like we have known each for a long time. It brings comfort to the conversation and a true care for people. The knowledge behind real estate can be learned, but the ability to actually care and understand people is a whole other category.
What was your favorite childhood memory?
Growing up in a semi small town in OK there wasn’t much to do and my cousins were a huge part of my life growing up. So my favorite childhood memory was likely being over at my grandmas with my cousins and we were either riding dirt bikes and four wheelers, playing like the swing set was our boat and the grass was shark infested waters, playing like we had a store with our fake mini cash register, I mean the list really goes on and on but just being at my grandmas with my family was always a blast!
