Today we’d like to introduce you to Terence Townsend.
Thank you so much for sharing your story and insight with our readers. To kick things off, how did you get started?
To say that I have always been passionate about learning and trying new things would be an understatement; I’ve always loved it! Meeting new people has also been a passion of mine. However, in the past, I allowed fear to keep me from pursuing my dreams. In my latest book, “Passionate Pursuits: The Mindset that is Unafraid of Challenges,” I share my journey and show how perseverance can change everything. Even though I grew up with undiagnosed dyslexia in a single-parent household, and struggled with insecurity, I worked hard to overcome these challenges. As a result, I have achieved success as an entrepreneur, community leader, and advocate. Unfortunately, when I was younger, I missed out on many opportunities due to insecurity.
Growing up, I lived in a single-parent home with a loving mother. Still, I felt the sting of not having a father around. In elementary school, I gained weight and my friends started calling me “Piggly Wiggly.” Yes, it hurt, but common experience among fatherless boys in my community. Additionally, bedwetting into my early teens caused anxiety and fear, particularly during sleepovers.
School itself was a challenge, mainly because when I started school, dyslexia wasn’t a recognized disorder. I have dyslexia, and I remember the anxiety I felt during my third-grade year, listening to my classmates read aloud. I would dread the moment when it was my turn to read. I still remember the looks and the snickers from my classmates. Even though my teacher tried to help, the damage was done. By the time I reached high school, I hated school. There were fun times, for sure, but I struggled academically. Like many people with dyslexia, I had a high IQ, but completing daily assignments was difficult and frustrating.
I remember participating in an after-school skit for incoming first-year students. I loved acting and enjoyed playing unique and exciting characters. After the skit, the new drama teacher approached me and asked me to join her theater class. I made every excuse I could think of, but she had a solution for each one. Finally, I told her, “I’ll see if I can fit it into my schedule.” The truth was, I was afraid to read a script in public. I never tried out for the class, and I still regret it. I eventually did some acting in college, but that’s a story for another time.
During high school, I grew tired of letting fear dictate my life and embarked on a journey of personal growth and empowerment. Years of self-sabotage and avoidance had obscured my greatest strengths. Through dedicated training, I learned to pre-study, effectively question in class, and hone my memorization skills. In college, I launched a gymnastics team, pushing myself far beyond my comfort zone. This transformative experience taught me resilience and revealed new strengths, aided by the camaraderie and support of my teammates.
Wanting to give back, I became involved with non-profit organizations. Each initiative I led aimed to create positive change in my community and other marginalized communities. The challenges were significant, but the rewards were immeasurable. I witnessed lives changed, souls saved, and God glorified through collaborative efforts. Life’s circumstances then forced me into entrepreneurship. While my family and I were homeless, I started several businesses. It was a difficult time, but God provided for us and showed us that better days were ahead. These businesses helped me grow professionally and allowed me to contribute to the economy and create jobs. I learned valuable lessons in leadership, innovation, and adaptability.
Today, I own several successful businesses, which is a testament to God’s grace and my faith in His plans. My journey has taught me valuable lessons about overcoming adversity, embracing personal growth, and making a positive impact on my community. I hope my story inspires you to embrace challenges and see them as opportunities for growth and transformation. I am excited to continue embracing new challenges, seeking growth opportunities, and striving for greatness.
Can you talk to us about the challenges and lessons you’ve learned? Looking back, has it been easy or smooth in retrospect?
In 2003, my family and I went through a difficult period of homelessness. I had been working as a high-tech recruiter in Austin, TX, and my wife, who was pregnant with our fourth child, was working as a sales manager at a local hotel. We had just finished building our first home when I lost my job. I found a new position as a manager in a bookstore, but due to the company’s unique culture, I didn’t last long. By this time, our fourth child had been born, and we were facing multiple foreclosure notices. With no income and mounting debt, we eventually lost both our cars and our house, leaving our family of six homeless for a year.
During this time, my wife and I wanted to shield our children from as much disruption as possible. We moved her and the kids to her parent’s house in Dallas while I stayed in our hometown, Temple, TX, to care for my ailing mother and grandmother. Amid this turmoil, I felt inspired to start two non-profit organizations and a new business, and I even launched a radio show. I used my unemployment benefits to buy a vehicle from a friend. Seven months into this challenging period, my grandmother passed away, followed by my great-grandmother a few weeks later. After taking care of the funerals, I spent weekends with my family in Dallas and the rest of my time building my ventures at a friend’s house, the library, or my in-laws’ home office. Despite the limitations, we were fortunate to have things start falling into place, and the ventures began to connect with the right audience.
In the twelfth month of our struggle, my wife learned about a state program that would cover schooling and housing costs. She was accepted and told to find a house. We searched the newspaper for homes and planned our route. We went to a big pink house, and my wife immediately knew it was the one. The house was recently remodeled and ready for us to move in. Just one day shy of a year of homelessness, we had the keys to that big pink house in hand and three thriving ventures.
During my time of homelessness, I learned that discouragement, shame, or poverty do not define our potential or determine our destiny. Life’s struggles help us grow and develop. Our hope must be stronger than our fear of failure, and our faith must rely on something greater than our abilities. If you’re interested in learning more about my story, please feel free to contact me. I’ll close this section with a quote that resonates with me: “We also brag when we are suffering. We know that suffering creates endurance, endurance creates character, and character creates confidence. We’re not ashamed to have this confidence.”
Great, so let’s talk business. Can you tell our readers more about what you do and what you think sets you apart from others?

Where we are in life is often partly because of others. Who/what else deserves credit for how your story turned out?
The strong women in my life played a key role in shaping the person I am today. My mother, Paula Sue Hewitt Townsend, was the second person in our family to graduate from college. Despite being a single parent and working nights as a jailer, later becoming a juvenile probation officer, she never let our struggles hold her back. On Sunday afternoons, we would drive through wealthier neighborhoods and talk about how God’s plan supports our dreams and inspires our future. My mother taught me to dream big.
My great-grandmother, Pauline Holland “Nannie,” worked most of her life as a maid and cook. She instilled in me the importance of responsibility, honor, and the courage to face my fears. My grandmother, Ina Pearl Hewitt, was a model of resilience. She worked as a housekeeper in our local hospital while raising four children as a single mom. When I was a teenager, I learned that she had been a local basketball star, leading her high school team to a state championship. Her dreams of attending college were put on hold due to young love. Her gentle spirit taught me to see the good in everyone and showed me that kindness and respect can open any door.
Her determination was also inspiring. At the age of 45, my grandmother enrolled in college and, building on her existing skills, earned a degree in hospitality management. She went on to manage upscale hotels and even became friends with celebrities like wrestler Rick Flair.
