Today we’d like to introduce you to Cindy Marabito
Hi Cindy, we’d love for you to start by introducing yourself.
I’ve been a writer and filmmaker for most of my adult life. I’ve written and published of Pit Bull Nation, a memoir about my life saving death row pit bulls and the trials of dealing with one of the country’s most affluent shelters. The book is a great resource for anyone in rescue or thinking about entering that life. Jackson is a novel about a 15 year-old white girl dealing with racism and hatred leading up to the real life murders at Jackson State College. Jules, the Truth Finder is an erotic paranormal romance and Small Texas is a collection of short stories about backwoods East Texas oddballs.
I directed and produced the movie The Dicks From Texas about the punk rock hardcore Austin, TX band along with a double covers cd featuring great Dicks songs covered by great bands, The Dicks From Texas and Friends. Currently. I am currently working on a documentary about the Austin blues band The Fabulous Thunderbirds. I was Detour Magazine’s Video Detour editor for several years and currently author the F–k You I’m From Texas Film Talk blog.
I created Cowbells and Ding Dongs, a podcast with its big toe never straying too far past Austin City Limits. I also penned the American Pit Bull Examiner column for over five years along with several other blogs including Pit Bulls and Other Animals. Hard at work on The Legend of Sky Diamond, a fake lowdown memoir on the DFW downlow, a collection of short stories based on the music of John Prine and also finishing up The Meanest Cat in the World about a clairvoyant feline who hits the big time.
I am an avid pit bull rescuer and all proceeds from writing and film work go toward my beloved dogs. I am also nose-deep in writing a memoir, Penny and Me about my mother’s dog whose spirit still guides me every day in my work. Check out my Cindy Marabito Youtube channel for the incredible music playlists that inspires my writing, a playlist for every book and a song for every chapter.
Can you talk to us a bit about the challenges and lessons you’ve learned along the way. Looking back would you say it’s been easy or smooth in retrospect?
Not particularly. I write to entertain myself and the quality of my work sustains me. That is why I write. There is something that happens when writing and the characters come alive and become their own reality. That is why I do it. Not only is it a great inspiration to keep plodding (plotting) along, but also can be a huge challenge. Those characters operate on their own time frame. Any good writer will agree they cannot be rushed. Very much like cats.
Appreciate you sharing that. What else should we know about what you do?
What sets me apart is my imagination. I have vivid dreams that could easily be turned into films. They, they dreams, really keep me going. I have a lot of ideas and stories I want to tell and am only getting started.
What has been the most important lesson you’ve learned along your journey?
To thine own self, be true.
