Today we’d like to introduce you to Ismael Ibarra Alcocer
Ismael, we appreciate you taking the time to share your story with us today. Where does your story begin?
I got evicted from my apartment because of the pandemic. I was battling depression because I felt like a failure, I went home to live back with my parents, felt defeated because it seemed that austin had kicked my butt, but during the pandemic. I started posting content on tiktok. I was sad and i wanted to be distracted. I started getting a lot of views on my page, and then i went viral. i started getting messages about how some of my followers had lost a family member and how my videos helped them laugh again. I started doing videos to forget about my own issues and slowly i was helping others while helping myself. i amassed a following and continued posting.
We all face challenges, but looking back would you describe it as a relatively smooth road?
It’s generally not easy, doing social media requires a lot of patience and tough skin. A lot of highs and lows. Hate is unfortunately part of the internet. There’s a ton of great things though, getting invited to Tiktok and Meta events, being randomly recognized all over town.
Thanks for sharing that. So, maybe next you can tell us a bit more about your work?
My background is theatre, did it in high school and college. Im mostly known for my comedy sketches on Tiktok and Instagram.
I’m most proud of being a part of the Beto Orourke Campain, my silly videos got me to spend a whole weekend with him when he was running for governor.
What sets me apart is, i was born in San Luis Potosí Mexico. My humor comes from the struggles of what it was like growing up as an illegal immigrant.
Are there any important lessons you’ve learned that you can share with us?
That views don’t define you. Building a community is far more important than going viral through every post. It’s important to acknowledge that some of our best work will go unnoticed. I’ve put days of work in skits, and my current most viewed video is sitting at 21 million on tiktok was a video that i shot in less than a minute. It’s difficult to not compare yourself to other creative creators. it’s difficult to continue posting sometimes when you know some of your really good friends are making a lot of money and you aren’t. It affects your relationships with people and friends. Sometimes it feels like people want to gain something from you, but there really isn’t anything. I get a lot of “can you help me grow online?” but it took me almost 4 years to figure it out. That’s not something that I can give out for free. Although there’s a ton of stuff that makes this not easy, the highs are that we get to make people laugh and entertain. I’ve inspired a lot of creators online. People that just needed a push to make this happen.
