We’re looking forward to introducing you to Bonnie Skulark. Check out our conversation below.
Hi Bonnie, thank you so much for joining us today. We’re thrilled to learn more about your journey, values and what you are currently working on. Let’s start with an ice breaker: What do the first 90 minutes of your day look like?
The first 90 minutes of my day are quiet and intentional. I start with prayer and reading the Holy Bible—it helps me center myself and set a peaceful tone for the day. From there, I drink some water and then fuel up with coffee. Then I glance at the day’s to-do list, and check any early messages or orders for Sweet Cream Skincare. That quiet time in the morning helps me stay rooted, especially when the day gets busy with creating products, fulfilling orders, and checking emails
Can you briefly introduce yourself and share what makes you or your brand unique?
Bonnie Skulark, the founder of Sweet Cream Skincare—a handmade, plant-based skincare brand rooted in simplicity and care. I started Sweet Cream in 2019 with a mission to create gentle, effective products my whole family could use, especially those with sensitive skin.
Our body creams are known for their rich, whipped texture and comforting scents like Lemon Cookie and Lavender. What makes our brand special is the heart behind it: everything is made in small batches with thoughtfully chosen ingredients—no fillers, just what your skin actually needs.
Beyond skincare, Sweet Cream is about creating a moment of ease in your day. We’re currently expanding our reach through local partnerships and preparing to launch a few new seasonal products. I’m excited to continue growing while staying true to our values: quality, simplicity, and care for the whole family.
Okay, so here’s a deep one: What part of you has served its purpose and must now be released?
The part of me that constantly felt like I had to prove my worth—whether as a creator, a businesswoman, or even just as a person—has served its purpose and is being released. For a long time, I operated from a place of striving: trying to earn validation, overworking to make everything perfect, and carrying the pressure of doing it all on my own.
But over time, I’ve learned to center myself in who Jesus says I am—chosen, loved, equipped, and enough. That truth grounds me more than any title or milestone ever could. I don’t have to hustle for my worth anymore. I show up each day in my business with grace, confidence, and peace—because I know I’m walking in purpose, and I’m not doing it alone.
Sweet Cream Skincare was built with intention and love, but now I run it from a place of identity, not insecurity. That shift has made all the difference in how I lead, create, and serve.
Was there ever a time you almost gave up?
Yes—there was a time in 2024 when I truly thought about walking away. Orders had completely slowed down, and I started questioning everything. I remember sitting with the idea of even selling the business—something I never imagined I’d consider. I had put so much love, time, and sacrifice into Sweet Cream Skincare, but at that moment, it felt like maybe its season was over.
I was exhausted—financially, emotionally, and spiritually. I wondered if people still cared, if the brand still had purpose, or if I had simply run out of grace to keep going. But deep down, I knew I needed to pause and re-center myself—not around the sales, the numbers, or even the pressure to keep producing—but around who Jesus says I am.
In prayer, I was reminded that my identity doesn’t come from business success—it comes from being chosen, equipped, and called. I started seeing small signs that Sweet Cream still had life: kind messages from past customers, moments of encouragement, and a renewed sense of purpose within me.
So yes, I almost gave up. I even considered selling the business. But God met me in that valley, and I chose to keep going—not just because of what I built, but because of who I’m becoming through the process.
Next, maybe we can discuss some of your foundational philosophies and views? What are the biggest lies your industry tells itself?
One of the biggest lies the skincare industry tells itself—and its customers—is that more is better. More products, more steps, more trends, more chemicals. But in reality, our skin doesn’t need to be overwhelmed to be cared for. That’s one reason I created Sweet Cream Skincare—to simplify the routine and return to what actually works: gentle, nourishing ingredients you can recognize and trust.
Another lie is that natural or handmade products aren’t as effective or professional as mass-produced ones. But what I’ve seen time and time again is that when something is made with intention, clean ingredients, and care, it can outperform what’s sitting on a store shelf with a huge marketing budget behind it.
Finally, the industry often promotes this subtle message that beauty or confidence has to look a certain way. But skincare, for me, is about care, not perfection. It’s about honoring your skin, not changing it. That’s the kind of truth I want Sweet Cream to speak—both through our products and through the way we show up.
Before we go, we’d love to hear your thoughts on some longer-run, legacy type questions. If you retired tomorrow, what would your customers miss most?
If I retired tomorrow, I think my customers would miss the intentionality and personal touch behind every product. Sweet Cream Skincare isn’t just about smooth skin—it’s about care, comfort, and consistency. People have told me they can feel the difference, not just in the way the body creams nourish their skin, but in how it feels to receive something made with real love and purpose.
They’d also miss the simplicity—the way we’ve made skincare easy, gentle, and family-friendly without all the hype or complicated routines. And I think some would miss the experience of being seen and valued as more than just a buyer. I truly care about the people using my products, and I believe that care comes through in every jar.
So if I stepped away, it wouldn’t just be the creams—I hope they’d miss the heart behind it.
