We recently had the chance to connect with Brent Broyles and have shared our conversation below.
Hi Brent, thank you so much for joining us today. We’re thrilled to learn more about your journey, values and what you are currently working on. Let’s start with an ice breaker: What is a normal day like for you right now?
Normal day is pretty chaotic with a new bar. Some days I work until 3am and write a grocery list before I head home. Stop by the new bar again at 10am, pick up the deposit, head to the OG bar, pick up the deposit and print menus. To the bank for both deposits, drop off change for OV bar on my way to pick up groceries, the deal with Restaurant Depot stocking and lines. Head to new bar to unload groceries, then work shift at by second bar. Get off work at second bar and head to new bar to make sure they are good and potentially work until 3 am if there isn’t enough staff. Plan to put almost a year of this amount of work to make sure the correct systems are out in place.
Can you briefly introduce yourself and share what makes you or your brand unique?
My name is Brent Broyles and I have opened a couple of neighborhood bars in the Austin area and saw an opportunity to open a new location at Walnut Creek Pub. Plan to bring the same neighborhood bar vibe with lots of local drafts and spirits to Walnut Creek Pub.
Okay, so here’s a deep one: Who saw you clearly before you could see yourself?
I think family and many fiends saw more of my potential than I ever did. I didn’t see how being pretty good at a lot of things but not great at anything could be useful in any profession, but it turns out running a business requires you to wear a lot of hats and it helps to to be able to juggle it, even if it isn’t executed perfectly sometimes.
Was there ever a time you almost gave up?
Wouldn’t saw I almost gave up on the entire idea of running bars, but I almost gave up on the quality during the pandemic. It was so hard to get staff and hard to get proper supplies and had to ask myself if it was worth it to keep beating myself up to keep things quality and fresh when it seemed like the customers just wanted a place to get out of the house and drink.
So a lot of these questions go deep, but if you are open to it, we’ve got a few more questions that we’d love to get your take on. Is the public version of you the real you?
Yes and no. There are far too many acquaintances in this industry for one to be friends with everyone. I have met a lot of great people and made a few great friends, but mostly I only have time for my work and my family.
Okay, so before we go, let’s tackle one more area. Are you doing what you were born to do—or what you were told to do?
I don’t know if we are born to do anyone thing, but I think most people will never even have the chance to think they got close. I think I have gotten very close to what I was born to do. I still enjoy what I am doing after fifteen years and keep signing up to do it for many more.
