An Inspired Chat with Dr. Brad Hutt of Northwest Austin

We recently had the chance to connect with Dr. Brad Hutt and have shared our conversation below.

Hi Brad, thank you so much for joining us today. We’re thrilled to learn more about your journey, values and what you are currently working on. Let’s start with an ice breaker: What’s the most surprising thing you’ve learned about your customers?
One of the most surprising things I’ve learned about the people we take care of is how much their emotional state and internal dialogue impacts their physical being. Very rarely do we see someone come into the office with an acute injury (car accidents, sports injury, etc.), but more often than not, we get the “straw that broke the camel’s back” story. The cumulative stresses have built up whether they realize it or not and it overloads their body’s capacity to handle it anymore.

The thing we tell our clients is that they’re not broken. Pain is an intelligent design of our body to let us know to stop. The body is doing what it was designed to do, but we need to be able to listen to it. We were made to heal, but we first have to get of the “fight or flight” state that we’ve been operating in. The brain directs the body towards what it needs to do. By getting out of that stressed state, we are able to move into healing mode (rest and digest). The body follows what the mind speaks to it. We try to get our clients to take inventory of what thoughts they are thinking and what emotions or stories they are telling themselves. By addressing these things, we’ve seen some amazing testimonials of healing.

Can you briefly introduce yourself and share what makes you or your brand unique?
We provide chiropractic care to pregnant moms, kiddos, entire families, and anyone who is looking to live their life at their highest capacity. We specialize in neurologically-based chiropractic care that addresses each individual’s ability to perform optimally, whether you are the 3 year-old learning to run/jump/climb or the 40-something mom trying to juggle all the things that mom life entails. We are not a pain practice, but a prevention and performance-based practice. We assess each client on an individual basis and tailor our care to their exact needs.

Revival Chiropractic got its name because we felt we were on the precipice of a major reawakening in healthcare. The health of our communities is trending downward, despite our country being the #1 spender in healthcare costs. The reliance on medications and a disregard for the innate ability to heal and thrive the way God uniquely designed us has come to a head. We wanted to open our clinic and position ourselves as a beacon of hope and healing for our community.

Healthy kids become healthy adults and so our drive it to serve whole families. We use the latest technology and techniques to assess our clients and provide the best possible recommendations and care. With being neurologically-based, our focus is on optimizing the nervous system (the master controller of the body) and allowing it to function at its highest capacity. This focus is what differentiates us from other chiropractors in the area.

Okay, so here’s a deep one: What did you believe about yourself as a child that you no longer believe?
That I was shy. That was a limiting belief I had since I was a kid and it has only been recently that I’ve taken the time to sit with that and deconstruct it. From taking the time to look at it, I came to the conclusion that I am just measured with my words and what I want to say. Growing up with three other siblings, you tend to fight for the opportunity to speak and be heard. I am more of an internalizer and absorber of information and opinions before offering my own. I’ve come to realize that that’s okay to be that way.

There’s limiting beliefs that you get put on kids growing up by all sorts of people (parents, teachers, coaches). Intentional or not, there’s major power in the words being spoke over someone. So from that, I’m very cognizant of the words I use when talking to our clients, my daughter, my wife, and those in my life. From being labeled early on as “shy” to now embracing that the words I speak have power and authority, what a transformation that has been.

Was there ever a time you almost gave up?
I almost dropped out of chiropractic school during my second trimester. I was overwhelmed with the course load and really questioned if it was a mistake to have left my teaching job to pursue chiropractic. There was other contributing stressors (lost relationships, moving cross country, etc.) that added to it and I didn’t have the tools and systems in place to manage my emotions and anxiety.

Thankfully, my parents were supportive and gave me the space to unload my feelings about the situation. My dad said something I’ll never forget and it was “there’s a lot of people who need the care you can provide to them.” That pulled me out of the self-centered hole I was sitting in and pulled me back to take an overhead view of the circumstances I was in. From there, I was able to learn the skills and tools to manage my stress and overcome the worries and feelings that wanted to rear their ugly heads. Once the tools and system was in place (Bible study, exercise, sleep), it seemed like those negative things melted away.

Next, maybe we can discuss some of your foundational philosophies and views? What’s a belief or project you’re committed to, no matter how long it takes?
That we are not broken and the body knows how to heal itself. That’s a foundational truth that I operate on and what we try to impress on all our clients. We were fearfully and wonderfully created. Of course, we need to provide the necessary resources for it to thrive, so that looks like prayer/meditation, quality nutrition, sound sleep, close relationships, and ability to move/exercise.

The media and online world wants us to believe that we’re broken and need the latest thing to heal. Red light therapy and cold plunges are great accessories, but they can’t fully provide the healing we are searching for. True healing comes from within.

Before we go, we’d love to hear your thoughts on some longer-run, legacy type questions. What light inside you have you been dimming?
Even though I’m 6’4″, I would say that at times I play small when it comes to expressing my beliefs and opinions. There are things I stand for and believe, but rarely put it out there. I feel like I’m breaking down the false belief that “no one cares what I believe.” I had told myself that everyone does that over social media and it feels watered down to join that crowd.

But what if what I had to say could impact even one person? That’s a question I asked myself and came to the conclusion that maybe my voice is full of influence and authority. Even if it’s not for the masses, it may be what one person needs to hear at a certain point in time. I know this because I’ve been that person searching, so it’s amazing to see it come full circle. So, I have to tell myself to “stand tall, speak boldly, and be authentically you”.
