Today we’d like to introduce you to Abby Jones.
Hi Abby, can you start by introducing yourself? We’d love to learn more about how you got to where you are today?
I initially moved to San Marcos, Texas to attend Texas State University. I graduated from the McCoy College of Business with a degree in management and entrepreneurial studies. I always wanted to work for myself, own my own business and most importantly I just really wanted to work with my hands. I was determined to find a career I would never be bored with and one day I had a literally epiphany. I can actually still remember the day and where I was when I had it and the realization was I needed to pursue a career in hair. After that day, I quite literally never looked back. I researched and through talking and communicating with people I knew around me I found Aveda Institute in downtown Austin! I attended Aveda right after graduating from Texas State University. It was a year of schooling and passing tests that I got my certificate of cosmetology. A month after receiving my certificate I started working behind the chair and I’ve been working behind the chair now for 13 years this October. It was the best decision I made going to cosmetology school. I get the creative aspect with working with my hands while simultaneously getting to yap yap yap with my some of my favorite people, my clients!
I’m sure it wasn’t obstacle-free, but would you say the journey has been fairly smooth so far?
Relatively it’s been a smooth road from the start, and I’m blessed to say that! With doing hair you obviously have your challenges and hiccups, nobody is perfect and we make mistakes but those turn into lessons learned! Doing hair has taught me communication skills, listening skills and how to set healthy boundaries if you can believe it. You want to deliver when it comes to service and also be a comfort to a client in your chair. My clients support me and my household 100% so I always want to give 100% to them!
Appreciate you sharing that. What else should we know about what you do?
I do hair! I do cuts, colors and extension installs. I work with my clients start to finish and I really find joy in completely transforming a look! The manipulation you can place on a strand of hair is very unique, scientific and creative with each and every head that sits in your chair. A hairstylist is a chemist when it comes to color formulation , a martial artist when it comes to cutting and a human hair growth regiment when it comes to extension installs. A jack of all trades is what I have to offer, one can add a therapist to the list as well! I’m proud of myself of going with my gut to pursue cosmetology. I can truly say I love my job.
What do you like and dislike about the city?
Austin has a lot to offer. It covers all the needs and wants of a person, and being south of Austin has its perks for sure. You’re out of the congestion of traffic and people but have the ability to venture inward for events and of course the amazing food!
