Today we’d like to introduce you to DJ Smurf iWork .
Hi DJ Smurf iWork, please kick things off for us with an introduction to yourself and your story.
I got into DJing in middle school, so I was in 7/8 grade. My uncle was a big-time DJ in Denver. He’s the reason I got into it once he moved back to Austin after my grandma/ his mom passed away. He was slowing getting back into it, and I was just a kid who was curious about certain things at that age and asked alot of questions about the equipment, So he used to take me with him to all his gigs, and I was only at the time just plugging and unplugging the equipment. I was the youngest person at every club at that time.
Would it have been a smooth road, and if not, what are some of the biggest challenges you’ve faced along the way?
If everything were so easy, the struggle would never look as pretty! Yes, I had a few bumps in the road once I truly got serious and focused on a plan. Coming up, I wasn’t getting booked alot cause I still needed to get a house’s whole name in the dj game, so clubs/promoters never looked my way, but I never let that discourage me! Instead, I just started throwing my events, which are still, to this day, the biggest Teen parties Austin has ever seen; that’s how I made a name for myself in the dj game. I took a market that nobody was paying attention to and turned it into the biggest thing ever in the city. We booked artists from all over Texas that were hot in that era of music for the kids to see, from Lil Ronny/Beat King/Yung Nation/Faime, etc., and the list goes on!
As you know, we’re big fans of you and your work. For our readers who might need to be more familiar, what can you tell them about what you do?
I’m known for my R&B mixtape series, and the one thing I’m most proud of this year was buying a restaurant last year. It’s called Stars Cafe, aka Star Seeds.
What were you like growing up?
I was just like any other kid. I played sports football and basketball was my thing. I was laid back and chill and never cared to be the center of attention.
