Check Out Alexander Scott’s Story

Today we’d like to introduce you to Alexander Scott.

Hi Alexander, it’s an honor to have you on the platform. Thanks for taking the time to share your story with us – to start maybe you can share some of your backstory with our readers?
I am an audio engineer, music teacher, screen printer, and a founding member of the band SATALiGHTS. I grew up in Mexico City. My mother and I moved to the United States when I was about 15 years old. We lived in a suburb of Boston, MA for a number of years until life changed and we found ourselves in Cibolo, Texas. My mother and step-father bought a house in this quiet suburb outside of San Antonio. After a short period of time, I found myself bored out of my wits and lusted for more adventure. I wasn’t very keen on regular schooling and had failed out of college a couple of times. So through some cosmic alchemy, I ended up finding very non-regular school located in the heart of Austin, TX. The school was called Mediatech institute and for the first time in my life, I truly felt like I was in the right place. At the time, Mediatech was located at the very famous Arlyn studios. Walking into this building, I immediately knew music would take over my life completely.

Music has always fascinated me. Since the toddler days lil’ ol’ me would sneak into the living room at night and play records from my father’s Vinyl collection. (which included rock acts like The Beatles, The Rolling Stones, or The Doors, and of course… my Dad’s favorite, Blues like Muddy Waters and B.B. King). As I grew older, my siblings did a great job at pointing me in other wonderful directions. Thanks to my older sister and brother, I discovered things like Nirvana, The Smashing Pumpkins, Jane’s Addiction, The Pixies, The Breeders, and Alanis Morissette. Naturally, after falling in love with music I began to play the drums. My mother loved me dearly and was very supportive so she found someone to loan us a drum set. She put up with hours of uninterrupted cacophony. Shortly after that, I began my relationship with the guitar which was set to flame by my sister ”V”. She gifted me her very beautiful American made Fender Telecaster which is named Peggy.

After I graduated Mediatech institute, I had a strong foothold in Austin. Through going out and doing recordings for local bands and running sound at various venues, I found myself immersed in the music scene. It didn’t take long before I started to think up my own musical endeavor.

SATALiGHTS started as a solo project. After many evolutions, the band is now set to 4 musicians.

SATALiGHTS is a post-punk Interstellar shoegaze band. The band is comprised of me and three other members: Mark Romano, Joseph Gardner, and Rudy Rivera. We have put out two collections of music. One of them being our latest album album “Little Star”.

Little Star was recorded at Stuart Sullivan’s (Butthole Surfers, Sublime, Willie Nelson) studio, Wire Recording in the Mosaic Sound Collective (site of the recent Black Puma’s “Tonight Show” performance). The single “Girl” off of their last EP “Post bed-room Rock” was recorded at Wire by Sullivan and the music video garnered over 90,000 views on TIMEWHEEL Records Facebook page. Mainstay Austin producer Carter Greeves of Wire Recording coproduced/engineered their newest record with me. renowned engineer Charles Godfrey (Yeah Yeah Yeahs, Swans, Explosions In The Sky) also assisted in the production of the album. ”The Cosmic Clash” blog reviewed the album and placed it on their list of top 20 albums of 2020 alongside with giants ”And they will know us by the trail of dead”, ”Star Parks”, and ”Jackie Venson”. The album also received airplay from Stations like KUTX in Austin and KVRX in San Antonio.

Little Star was born out of my agony after the death of my beloved mother. Even though it hurt to lose her, it also saved my life. Her death put a lot of things into perspective and got me out of a really dark place. The album was my way of carrying on my mother’s spirit through our shared love of music. She gave so much of her light to me and I just want to pass that on through this music so that other people can see how radiant she was and know what it felt like to be loved by her.

We are currently working on another record at my home.

Aside from making music, I also work with a non-profit called Beyond The Grade ( which has now changed its name to Beat 4 Beat). Beat 4 Beat works with underprivileged youth in AISD and Del Valley School Districts. We offer music programs as after school electives for kids from kindergarten up until middle school. The programs include classes like Beats class, Rock band class, Guitar class, and Piano Class. The classes are taught by local Austin musicians.

Lastly, thanks to music I found myself wanting to make merchandise for my band. This lead me down a path to where I now run a Screen Printing business with my talented friend Jon. The name of our shop is The Yah Team. We are a new print shop catering to local artists and musicians. Our mission is to support up and coming artists by providing affordable rates, and showcasing them through events and compensating their performances with merchandise.

Truly what makes everything so amazing and possible in this city is the wonderful people that live in it. Without my friends and those closest to me, my dreams would have never come true.

Would you say it’s been a smooth road, and if not what are some of the biggest challenges you’ve faced along the way?
Life is like a wave or the stock market. It goes up and down. I have experienced some turbulence in the past with things like drugs and alcohol mostly. These things do hinder progress. Currently, I am just working on being the best version of myself every single day. If I don’t care for myself how can I care about those around me.

The bumpier the road, the better the view at the end of the road.

Appreciate you sharing that. What else should we know about what you do?
I am energy that creates vibration for other sources of energy to enjoy. My expertise lies in wiggling air.

I am a drummer, producer, guitarist, songwriter and singer.

I am my own universe and that is what sets me apart from others. You are your own universe too, go explore it!

What matters most to you? Why?
Empathy, patience, and humility. If we all always remember that we are all the same… Harmony is possible.
