Today we’d like to introduce you to Angelo Pegran.
Hi Angelo, thanks for joining us today. We’d love for you to start by introducing yourself.
Everything started after I graduated from Highschool. I was 18 years old and became very curious in painting. Born in Los Angeles and raised in Monterrey, Mexico by a single mom and facing financial struggles, I decided to pause school and find a full-time job. I started working in a department store selling shoes but my curiosity for painting/art didn’t go away. one day before work, I spotted this pop-up art market that was near the mall I was working at, and I remember being amazed by this guy’s paintings and talking to him, I jokingly said, “please show me your techniques!” and a week after I was seating in his studio having a 1:1 lesson. I submerged in that world and learned about shapes, colors, tools and concepts for several months. In the meantime, I became good friends with the employees at the MAC Cosmetics counter next to the department store I was working at, they expressed interested in having me in their team and offered me a position as a Sales Associate/Makeup artist, but makeup then was not even an idea in my mind lol. So, I went through the interview process anyway and surprise, surprise! I had to do a makeup application in front of all the Regional Trainers and keep in mind I’ve never touched someone’s face with a makeup brush before *nervously laughs*. But during this process, I linked everything I learned in the painting studio, and it became the most natural thing for me, that’s when I opened the door to this new incredible world that I get to call my true passion now.
The years after that, I got to meet and learn from amazing Makeup Artist like Luis Torres from Mexico, Ashley Holm from US, Michelle Magnani from Italy and I was able to be part Fashion Week in Mexico City doing makeup for amazing designers. Moved to Houston, Texas in 2011 and I had the opportunity to work for brands like Chanel, Dior, Makeup Forever, Kat Von D, Hourglass and Laura Mercier. I was also able to create my brand, Angelo Makeup and collaborate with amazing local Creatives.
In March 2020, I relocated to Austin and I’m very excited to discover what new opportunities this vibrant city has for me.
I’m sure you wouldn’t say it’s been obstacle free, but so far would you say the journey have been a fairly smooth road?
The most challenging part of my journey was moving back to the US after years of not being involved with language and culture, I had to learn the language and was a bit hard to adjust and connect with people. It definitely felt like a big pause in my career.
Thanks for sharing that. So, maybe next you can tell us a bit more about your work?
I am a Makeup artist and I specialize in photo and video productions. As well as bridal and social events, my goal is to provide the most personalized service to the muse seating in my chair. I feel proud and comfortable saying that with my skills, I can help enhance the features of any ethnic background, skin tones and preferences based on my muse’s lifestyle.
Can you talk to us a bit about happiness and what makes you happy?
What makes me happy when working with clients is the process of discovering who the person seating in front of me is, the exchange of questions and the way their lifestyle dictates what colors and shades I’m going to pick as I go. And of course, the end result is always so gratifying!
When I’m not working, what makes me happy is to spend some time by myself, play some music, pour a glass of wine and paint from time to time. These moments are to recharge and they are sacred to me.
