Today we’d like to introduce you to Ashley Candace.
Alright, so thank you so much for sharing your story and insight with our readers. To kick things off, can you tell us a bit about how you got started?
I started Hellbound glass in 2016. I had always been an artist and had never made it my focus. I started experimenting with wood art first. I thought it would be cool to put strips of glass or mirrors in my wood art. Which lead me to google how to cut glass…and stained glass came up. I watched a 2 minute youtube video and jumped right in. In my first pop up I made some pieces including feathers, lopsided potleafs, and lightening bolts but people still liked them. My boss at Bouldin Creek Cafe saw what I was doing and asked me to make large panels for her windows. (A death before decaf and A make coffee not war piece) With very little experience, I was making these giant panels but they did come together. Over time I honed my craft and things came together. I love both rock and roll and all things dessert. I love pieces of rock n roll icons like Rob Halford to desert scenes. Austin is a great place to be an artist. It has a thriving pop-up scene, very supportive businesses, and community.
We all face challenges, but looking back would you describe it as a relatively smooth road?
There was a learning curve but I would say overall things were pretty smooth. Everything fell into place and just kept building organically.
Can you tell our readers more about what you do and what you think sets you apart from others?
I’m a stained glass and wood artist. I make both small and large scale art. I’ve made earrings and small suncatchers. I’ve also built doors and large scale stained glass panels, as well as a wrap-around bar overhang. I have my art in establishments around Austin including, Yellow Jacket Social Club, Bouldin Creek Cafe, Native, the Tavern, Silver Medal, and the list goes on. I really have created a life that I love following my passion. I’m most proud of the life I’ve created for myself. My work is more modern then the typical stained glass. I love making members of Kiss and other metal icons. I also love to making plants and cacti.
What sort of changes are you expecting over the next 5-10 years?
Honestly, I don’t think that far ahead. I think when you enjoy yourself and get lost in the process things just grow and evolve on their own. I think in 5-10 years, I will just build upon what I have now.
