Today we’d like to introduce you to Austin and Megan Smith
Hi Austin and Megan Smith, please kick things off for us with an introduction to yourself and your story.
We started making pizza during the Covid-19 lock down (like many others) and once the restrictions were lifted we just kept making pizzas. First just for ourselves, then for friends and family, and then our nephews birthday party. About a year after making our first pizzas we ended up moving to North Carolina where we started doing some pop ups at breweries, bars, or just about anywhere that would let us set up and sling pies. When we started noticing repeat customers that were strangers to us we realized that people were really enjoying what we were doing. After a year in N.C. we decided to pack up and come back to Austin with plans of opening a food trailer. With over 16 years combined service industry experience in Austin, we felt that our community here was the community we wanted to serve. Throughout the year 2023 we started doing pop ups around Austin as a way to promote ourselves and earn a little cash to put towards our pizza trailer dreams. In May of 2024 we finally opened the Good Vibrations Pizza Co. trailer currently located on the back patio of King Bee on Austin’s Eastside.
We all face challenges, but looking back would you describe it as a relatively smooth road?
The road to food truckin’ has not been a smooth one! Even though we had loads of service industry experience going into this, neither of us had ever made started a business, or built a concept from scratch. Every step along the way has been one that we had to teach ourselves. From permit forms to health inspections, from stuccoing our oven to developing recipes, we are self taught. Luckily, we have a strong “community over competition” view and have met some pizza friends along the way that have really helped us out.
Can you tell our readers more about what you do and what you think sets you apart from others?
We own and operate a pizza company. As a small team of just two people (who happen to be married as well) we do everything. This includes making dough from scratch, baking in an 800 degree wood-fired oven, taking orders, doing dishes, accounting, taxes, ordering and a whole list of other things. We have deep passion and pride for what we do and we believe this shows in every step of the process.
What would you say have been one of the most important lessons you’ve learned?
Things won’t go as planned. It is crucial to be able to communicate openly with your partner in life and in business to be able to go with the flow. Whatever is thrown at you be ready to pivot and make the best decision to keep moving forward.
