Check Out Brett Douglas’s Story

Today we’d like to introduce you to Brett Douglas.

Hi Brett, we’d love for you to start by introducing yourself.
Bastrop Pride started in December 2021. We immediately saw a need for a Pride Festival and started planning our 2022 inaugural Pride Festival. We assumed Bastrop’s Pride in the Park would be a small event with 100 folks. Surprisingly, over 300 people showed up, indicating we needed to keep up this good work. 2023 is only our second year, and we are growing! Bastrop County is so close to the Sherwood Faire, which gave us the idea that we could do something different. Hence the Street Faire idea was born. We will be shutting down a block in downtown Bastrop this year, with much support from the City—this addition to our weekend festival and having musical performances at Pride in the Park. So we are constantly amazed at how far we’ve come in such a little time. (personal photos provided are of the chairman, Brett Douglas, and the vice=chair, Nicole DeGuzman)

You wouldn’t say it’s been obstacle free, but so far would you say the journey has been fairly smooth?
It’s been smooth sailing for the most part. We believe in the strength of our community and our allies. Of course, we’ve heard unfortunate comments online. However, in-person events have yet to experience struggles, bigotry, or protestors.

Let’s switch gears a bit and talk business. What should we know about your work?
There is little to tell. I (Brett Douglas, Bastrop Pride Chairman) work in the tech industry. I have worked for the same company for 15 years, working from home. This has allowed me to focus on making Bastrop Pride successful.

How would we have described you growing up if we knew you were growing up?
If you didn’t know me, I was a quiet kid who kept to himself. Like many geeks, I indulged in comics, Star Trek, and Dungeons & Dragons. However, if you did know me, you know I was loud, chatty, and brimming with hyperactive energy. I was slow to open up to folks, which has carried over to adulthood.
