Today we’d like to introduce you to Caroline Mahomar
Alright, so thank you so much for sharing your story and insight with our readers. To kick things off, can you tell us a bit about how you got started?
I am a 4th generation Palestinian/Egyptian Artist raised in Tegucigalpa, Honduras, now residing in the United States. Raised by immigrant parents in a chaotic developing country, my diverse upbringing led to the search for meditative visual aesthetics through mediums such as painting, drawing, and photography creating meaning and beauty through the exploration of light and darkness.
My career as a visual artist began in my teens with monochrome drawings, where I studied composition and light. In 2014 I moved to New York City as a part-time photographer in the fashion & music industry and exploring the art world. In 2016, I created and exhibited in NYC and Boston a project named “sentīre”, it displays lines and textured gradient patterns using soft pastels. The patterns present a visual movement toward the center of the canvas, forming portals into light or darkness.
In 2017, I moved to Miami and worked part-time in the Latin music industry while finding my way to become a full-time visual artist. In 2023, I visited Austin, fell in love with the city, and decided to embark on a full-time artist journey and have my painting studio here.
I am currently exhibiting artworks in multiple art fairs and group shows, inviting spectators to look deeper than meets the eye, with an exploration of their own light through darkness.
Alright, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
My biggest challenge as an artist has been the journey of unlearning—rewiring the thoughts and beliefs I was raised with. Living and traveling with my work opened my eyes to just how easily our minds are shaped by whatever we focus on, whether it’s culture, people, or even fleeting ideas. That awareness sparked a deep questioning in me: Were my beliefs, my habits, my choices truly mine, or were they echoes of external influences? Along the way, I faced failures in every part of life—whether in creating, business, relationships, or friendships. But each failure became a lesson, a step that shaped me into the person and artist I am today. Now, I channel the light I’ve discovered through my art, hoping it can be a guide for others on their own path to self-discovery.
Thanks – so what else should our readers know about your work and what you’re currently focused on?
I am currently painting and exhibiting a series of Portals, exploring the concept of doorways as gateways to different realms and dimensions. The spiritual meaning of this painting is inspired by a dream I had with my father after I lost him suddenly in 2017. In the dream, I asked him, “What is God?” and he showed me a bright light. This revelation is reflected in the artwork’s composition, where the radiant white center symbolizes divine presence, truth, and clarity—an embodiment of the answer my father revealed.
Surrounding this light are layers of darkness, representing the shadow—the parts of the self that remain hidden, suppressed, or unexplored, in line with Jungian philosophy. The painting acts as a portal for viewers, I invite them to explore their spiritual journey, navigating between the conscious light and the unconscious shadow. The rough textures and swirling forms suggest the emotional and spiritual complexity of an inner journey. Ultimately, the collection is both a tribute to my father and an invitation for others to seek their answers about the divine, the conscious self, and the process of integrating light and shadow.
How do you think about happiness?
