Today we’d like to introduce you to Ricky Sourignavong aka Chef Bambu.
Hi Chef Bambu, can you start by introducing yourself? We’d love to learn more about how you got to where you are today?
Hello, my name is Ricky Sourignavong, but I go by the name of “Chef Bambu”. Born and raised in Tulsa, Oklahoma. I have traveled to many places after high school to see what the world is about before settling down here in Austin, Texas. I was family educated on the styles of cooking traditional Laotian food from my grandmother which I would watch and learn from to get her recipes and turn them into my own. Growing up our family has been in the restaurant for many decades.
The reason I chose to open our first restaurant here in Austin, is because I felt like there were no authentic style Laotian food around without a westernized mixed in the menu or foods. By meaning, I would keep it very authentic with the ingredients my grandmother taught me to use. When we first opened in August of 2022, our menu consisted of many authentic Laotian dishes from our culture. Our Sai Oui (Lao sausage) and Seen Savanh ( heavenly beef jerky) is a very big hit on our menu, which we use our own recipe and are made in-house.
I’m sure you wouldn’t say it’s been obstacle free, but so far would you say the journey has been a fairly smooth road?
As far as the road to success, it has its ups and downs. Just like the roads on the map, there will be bumps and we would have to get through it to find our way.
Alright, so let’s switch gears a bit and talk business. What should we know about your work?
What can I say about my work? I just wanna bring happiness to peoples stomachache’s and have people enjoy the foods from my culture.
What matters most to you?
What matters most would be that, people enjoy our foods and learn about our culture through our foods.
