Today we’d like to introduce you to Cory Cory.
Hi Cory, thanks for joining us today. We’d love for you to start by introducing yourself.
A few years ago, I tripped on a train track in Budapest and shattered my wrist. After a horrific all-nighter spent in a Hungarian emergency room, I flew back to Austin for emergency surgery. I thought I knew myself pretty well before that, but as it turns out, not so much. For years I had been a singer/songwriter and performer, and acoustic guitar was my instrument. After this accident abroad, I ended up developing a pain disorder and needing a second surgery. There was no way I could play guitar, maybe not ever again. I couldn’t express myself through music and I was in constant pain, and quite frankly, I got pretty depressed. Luckily, I was seeing a good therapist! And I started rehabilitation for my hand and wrist. Knowing that I had to have some sort of creative outlet to function, I started teaching myself how to produce and how to write music in a DAW instead of on a guitar. It was a very slow process but really rewarding. And then I took on an alter ego, “Cory Cory” (My real name is Jess Braun Poropat.). Flash forward a few years, and now I’ve written hundreds of songs, licensed music to films, scored the music for a documentary, and will be releasing a self-produced album in the Fall. And because I love what I do so much, I want to teach other people, so I recently launched an online course for aspiring singers called “Six Week Singer”. If I had never fallen on that train track, I never would have been able to make the kind of music that I’m now able to make.
Appreciate you sharing that. What else should we know about what you do?
When it comes down to it, I’m a singer. It’s my first love. If it wasn’t for this voice, I’m not sure I’d have been a musician. I love singing for people, and I love teaching other people how to find their voices.
What are your plans for the future?
I’m looking forward to releasing this album! Some of these songs were written, like, years ago – so I’ll be excited to get them out into the world.
