Check Out Dana Dang’s Story

Today we’d like to introduce you to Dana Dang

Hi Dana, we’d love for you to start by introducing yourself.
I was always a very crafty person! I enjoyed being creative growing up but undergrad at Texas A&M University was where I learned the validity of a creative career. I had an art minor where I learned the basics of graphic design and taught myself the rest! I have been doing graphic design for the past several years and have loved creating and collaborating on cool projects for both small businesses and larger corporate brands.

I’m sure it wasn’t obstacle-free, but would you say the journey has been fairly smooth so far?
It hasn’t always been smooth! There were periods when I doubted the validity of my unconventional career, suffered from burnout, and overworked myself to prove a point. Despite these low periods, I saw them as learning opportunities to create much more sustainable routine in my current career.

Appreciate you sharing that. What else should we know about what you do?
I am a graphic designer turned art director! I freelance and work mainly with small businesses to brand for them and create assets that feel like THEM! Most of the people I work with are women who have started their own business and have made a name for themselves and I am here to tell their story to the world through visuals and graphics.

In my corporate career, I currently work as a Junior Designer for an agency while pursing my MPS degree in Branding + Integrated Communications at The City College of New York (hence why I live in NYC now). I want to be an art director further on in my career and hope to lead the world of communications and advertising to one of good social impact and change.

Risk taking is a topic that people have widely differing views on – we’d love to hear your thoughts.
I know myself to be very logistical, practical, and realistic. Even though I work in a creative field, I tend to be very structured in my process. Obviously, risks can mean a break of structure and could lead me into the “unknown,” Though the lack of security does make me nervous, every risk I have taken for my career in terms of moving to NYC to further my education and taking freelancing more seriously has paid off. It has not only benefitted the growth of my business and skills but it has a great impact on the people I work with and learn with. Being able to use my skills for the success and growth of others has been a surprising element I have enjoyed in this journey I am on. Empowering others is something I never thought of being able to do directly but all my risks have proven that I can be a force for good.
