I began my journey in 2017 when I founded Clever Sound Productions, driven by my passion for music. It all started with humble beginnings, crafting tracks using just my phone. This initial experimentation ignited my creativity and allowed me to develop my sound. As I honed my skills, I expanded my vision by launching an online store to sell products, leveraging multiple platforms to reach a wider audience while simultaneously producing and releasing my music. This hands-on experience not only deepened my understanding of the music industry but also taught me invaluable lessons in entrepreneurship and marketing.
As I progressed, I realized the need to refine my focus, which led me to transition from Clever Sound Productions to establishing the Derrick Brown Music Store. This new venture serves as my dedicated platform for music publishing and retail, allowing me to streamline my efforts and better connect with my audience. Today, I am proud to combine my creative endeavors and business acumen, continuously evolving within the ever-changing landscape of the music industry while fostering a community around my brand.
We all face challenges, but looking back would you describe it as a relatively smooth road?
Absolutely, the road to becoming an owner-operator has definitely had its challenges, but each struggle has taught me valuable lessons that have shaped my journey. When I first started out with my online store, it was particularly tough. I was venturing into uncharted territory and had to teach myself everything from scratch. Many of the lessons I learned came the hard way, whether it was navigating platform intricacies, understanding customer behavior, or figuring out effective marketing strategies. This is actually my third online store; each iteration has been a learning experience, and I’ve taken the opportunity to refine my approach.
One key takeaway from my early struggles is the importance of building a solid foundation. This time around, I’m focusing on patience and ensuring all aspects of the business are set up correctly before scaling. It’s tempting to rush into growth, but I’ve learned that taking the time to establish a robust structure pays off in the long run.
In addition to my online ventures, I also pursue music, which is another passion of mine. Interestingly, I haven’t faced significant obstacles in that realm. I find joy in the creative process, and while my musical endeavors may not currently generate substantial income, they fuel my creativity and provide a fulfilling outlet alongside my business efforts. Ultimately, one of my goals is to secure sponsorships that would allow me to devote more time to both my businesses and music, giving me the freedom to explore these passions fully.
Overall, while the journey has certainly had its bumps, I’ve been fortunate to maintain my job throughout. This stability has been crucial, as it allows me to manage my financial responsibilities—like paying our mortgage and bills—while I grow my businesses. By staying in control of my pace and taking deliberate steps forward, I’m building not just a business, but a sustainable future that aligns with my passions and goals. Each challenge has only strengthened my resolve, and I’m excited about where this path will lead.

As a music producer, I start every song from scratch, mostly creating instrumentals. Once a song is finished, I switch roles and take care of the business side by registering the music, choosing a distribution platform, and handling marketing. If there is merchandise like T-shirts or cups, I also design and prepare that for release.
On the online store side, I regularly update the store, make sales, respond to customers, and add new products. These are areas I work in and specialize in.
I am known for being a hard worker who genuinely cares about fans. I take time to respond on social media and spread positive motivation whenever I can.
What sets my music apart is that I create across all genres. My sound is unique and designed to bring good vibes to anyone who listens.
