Today we’d like to introduce you to Elizabeth Flowers
Hi Elizabeth, thanks for joining us today. We’d love for you to start by introducing yourself.
I have been baking since I was little, I actually sold my first cake when I was about 12. I am a self taught cake and cookie decorator but I do have experience in commercial kitchens. I have worked in several bakeries and gained substantial experience with bread and pastry, my true passions. I love cake and cookie life as well! It allows me to feed my artistic appetite. I have an art background and I love that I get to be creative every day I’m in the kitchen.
I began Kitchen Elf when my first son was born. I was working at a local Austin bakery at the time with plans to return after maternity leave but the time came and I wasn’t ready to spend time away from my newborn. SO, I started Kitchen Elf and had another part time home gig rolling energy balls. Eventually, word of mouth took over and Kitchen Elf gained popularity. Now here I am, running my own Cottage Bakery that helps sustain my families financial needs!
Alright, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
It is not easy for sure but I love it. I operate at a high volume for one individual so my home bakery life is fast paced with little sleep and a lot of work. My largest struggle these days would be keeping the stress separated from my family. My kids basically live in a bakery and if I’m worried about an upcoming deadline they definitely pick up on it. It can get quite chaotic on the weekends. Luckily my husband is an amazing supporter and does everything in his power to make it all as easy as possible. Costco runs, late night HEB trips, and he makes deliveries for me.
As you know, we’re big fans of you and your work. For our readers who might not be as familiar what can you tell them about what you do?
I have an art background, I love math and I love bringing joy to others. Kitchen Elf checks all of those boxes. Every weekend brings something completely different. Orders are steady throughout the weekdays but Friday-Sunday are my non stop days. That’s when people like to throw birthday parties, wedding showers, baby showers, dinner parties, all the events that one would love to feature cakes, desserts and any show stopping confections. I am known mostly for my one of a kind cakes and decorated cookies but am also loved for my desserts! Pies, King Cakes, Macarons, Tarts, Churros, beignets, the list goes on and on and I love every minute. New challenges are always welcomed. I do specialize in accommodating dietary restrictions and allergies. Eggless, Dairy Free, Vegan, Gluten Free even Sugar free.
We love surprises, fun facts and unexpected stories. Is there something you can share that might surprise us?
Up until recently it was just me and my little residential oven. Not even a double oven, just my little GE. Recently I wired my garage for a commercial Blodgett which has been a total game changer, but for 8 years I was baking hundreds of cookies and dozens of cakes in my poor overworked home oven.
