Check Out Heath Thompson’s Story

Today we’d like to introduce you to Heath Thompson.

Hi Heath, can you start by introducing yourself? We’d love to learn more about how you got to where you are today?
In 2005, I was an actor for the Scottish Rite Children’s Theatre. The company had started writing their own scripts soon after I had rooted myself as a core member. This up-and-coming program wanted 30-45 minute interactive adaptations of classic fairy tales. I mentioned that I was a self-taught writer so it wasn’t a surprise when I was asked to write my own version of Sleeping Beauty. I was allowed only four actors so the cast had to be versatile. Each show would start with a specific set of rules for the kids – something to loosen the kids up and have them ready to participate. Our goal was to tell stories that were engaging and honest but not scary. After all, this was about introducing young ones to theatre and having them excited for it. This became my formula, and I was given many opportunities to get better at it. After I left the Scottish Rite due to ownership change, I followed my friend Bridget Gates out to Wimberley to write for her program. My scripts are now routinely performed at the Central Texas Theatre Academy and some other surrounding schools and theaters. Over the years, I’ve had dozens of my scripts produced and performed for several generations of kids. Nothing is sweeter and more satisfying than knowing that.

I’m sure you wouldn’t say it’s been obstacle free, but so far would you say the journey have been a fairly smooth road?
I wouldn’t say smooth, but definitely not rough. Maybe a tad bit bumpy. There are a couple of my scripts I had produced in the past that I’ll no longer allow to happen. Mainly the ones that were too similar to the well-known adaptations or because I simply find them awful now. Plus having to write with such restrictions was always challenging. Only four actors! Interactive! It’s a challenge keeping it all fresh.

Appreciate you sharing that. What else should we know about what you do?
In the art world, I’m mostly known for writing interactive children’s theatre. However, I’ve also written a couple of full length shows. Two have been produced so far. One is a time traveling western, that happens to be a melodrama with full interactive bits for the whole family. And the other was a adventurous adaptation of Robin Hood with a cast of over 20 actors. I was lucky to direct both of them. I’ve also directed several of my children shows throughout the years. My passion for writing and directing aren’t just for the stage. I’ve completed 3 independent short films as well. One was accepted to a horror film festival in Atlanta, Georgia where it received a nomination for Best Short Film. Lately, I’ve been quiet in the art world. I haven’t directed or acted in a few years because of the pandemic. This past year, my wife and I were blessed to have our first child. I became the father of a beautiful baby boy with a critical heart condition. He’s doing well, but my wife and I have been playing it safe for his sake. I can’t wait until my son is old enough to see some of my shows.

What do you like best about our city? What do you like least?
It’s an ambitious city full of talent. It’s just too crowded and expensive now.
