Check Out Jenny King’s Story

Today we’d like to introduce you to Jenny King.

Alright, so thank you so much for sharing your story and insight with our readers. To kick things off, can you tell us a bit about how you got started?
I originally got into photography because of the experience I had with my own wedding photographer. I loved the energy & the feeling of a wedding day. I’ve always dabbled in photography going all the way back to high school when I learned to develop film. After the birth of my third baby, we made the decision for me to stay home with him during his early years & I quit my full-time job. During this time, I started shooting sessions here & there for friends & family. Little did I know it would turn into a full-blown career that has allowed me to travel the world & do what I love all the same time. Since starting photography, I have shot over 100 weddings, have traveled & worked in three different countries, have won numerous awards & have been published nationally & internationally. I have launched an associate company with photographers who work under me & also own & operate a photography rental studio. Grateful is an understatement.

When my industry (like so many others) was drastically affected by being shut down during COVID, I had to come up with a way to continue making money without relying on venues to open back up. I have always done boudoir photography (weddings & boudoir go hand in hand) but it had a very film-like aesthetic that was representative of my wedding style. While it was beautiful, I didn’t feel that style was truly representing the power of women. Thus, Black Dahlia Boudoir was born.

I am a Gemini so bouncing between ideas is something that is in my nature. I often refer to Black Dahlia as the yin of Jenny King Photography. It’s dark, sultry & empowering. All women deserve to see this version of themselves at least once in their life & the confidence boost this experience gives women is addicting. Often clients see their images & say “I can’t believe that is me.”

I’m sure you wouldn’t say it’s been obstacle free, but so far would you say the journey have been a fairly smooth road?
Black Dahlia was born in December of 2020 so we are still in the new stages of our business. For the most part, once BDB was launched people kept telling me THIS IS WHAT WE WERE WAITING FOR FROM YOU. The support has been overwhelming & encouraging! We are currently in the process of relocating to a bigger studio to support more clients!

Alright, so let’s switch gears a bit and talk business. What should we know about your work?
I am proud to be a source of encouragement to women in my area. Most women walk through life putting themselves on the back burner. It is in our nature to put others first & if there’s time, then we will make an effort to put something back into ourselves. It doesn’t matter your age, share or size…all women deserve to be reminded of how incredible they are.

Can you talk to us about how you think about risk?
I think anyone opening a business is taking a risk. I also think that boudoir is particularly risky because not everyone has an open mind to this type of work. So many different factors play a part in the success of a business like this. It is extremely hard to market because it is such a sensitive type of imagery. Many people prefer not to have their images shared (understandably) because of their nature but this makes it hard to market to others. Instagram & Facebook are also very picky about what can be posted so getting your work in front of the eye of potential new clients can be tough.
