Today we’d like to introduce you to Jessica Penny.
Hi Jessica, please kick things off for us with an introduction to yourself and your story.
Harper Rae Photography began in 2016 after having a few babies and realizing how important freezing time was. I started photography as a hobby along side a career as a developmental therapist and it quickly became a full time business rather than just a hobby. I chased creativity and working with people, quickly realizing that this was what I was meant to do. I entered into an internship to learn as much as I could about the business side as well as what all I could create with my camera and honed in on what I love to capture. Photography has such a large wingspan when it comes to an audience and also includes so many genres and opportunities, but I have found my love in capturing families.
Would you say it’s been a smooth road, and if not what are some of the biggest challenges you’ve faced along the way?
Taking photographs themselves, is often a smooth road. It’s all of the rest that I didn’t take into consideration upon starting a business. As an entrepreneur, you often assume all of the roles in your business, not just the creative. I am also the social media manager, the book keeper, the scheduler, the editor, the weatherman, and more. It can be a little overwhelming at times to wear so many hats at once, but honestly, I wouldn’t change any of it. Some of the hardest challenges I have had over the years were personal relocations. Harper Rae photography originated in Houston and after three years moved to Nashville. In 2021 we relocated once more as a family and have planted some deep roots here in the Austin area. The hardest part in moving was leaving clients who quickly became friends. During each move, I had to start over, rebuilding my business from the ground up. I had to really market myself and my work to attract new clients and also had to spend hours searching for new locations.
As you know, we’re big fans of you and your work. For our readers who might not be as familiar what can you tell them about what you do?
I am known for a true to color, timeless style of photography. One of the things that I think sets me a part from other photographers is that I am a mom to 4 littles humans 11 and under and I have had 15+ years of experience working with so many families who have young children. I bring high energy and FUN to every session all while focusing on beautiful portraits for families to keep for years to come.
We love surprises, fun facts and unexpected stories. Is there something you can share that might surprise us?
I grew up thinking, dreaming, and pursuing a career in teaching. I earned my bachelors in education, but have never taught in a classroom setting. I am currently working on a mentoring program for other aspiring photographers who may be just starting out. Details on that are coming soon.
