Today we’d like to introduce you to Josh Benson.
Hi Josh, we’d love for you to start by introducing yourself.
I started this business with a dream of being self-employed! I’ve always had ambition and the courage to take chances for something I believe in. Once I found out about this business idea due to a trip to Las Vegas for my birthday I knew it would be successful in the city of Austin. I began doing my research and made my first purchase of one Polaris slingshot. Shortly after that It only made sense to Finance two other slingshots so there’s options for my future customers. In the beginning, it was really hard to gain the attention that there is today, people didn’t know that you can rent such a thing. After long days and long nights of being a part of the community, spreading the word, and pulling up to all events possible, it suddenly became popular. Today ATX Slingshot Rentals is 90 percent booked every weekend with a couple of days during the week booked. Now it’s becoming THE thing to do for special events, birthdays, etc.
Can you talk to us a bit about the challenges and lessons you’ve learned along the way. Looking back would you say it’s been easy or smooth in retrospect?
The struggles of starting this business affected me both mentally and financially. On the mental side of things, it affected my ego and power to believe in myself. On the financial side, it hurt me in the beginning due to the fact of nobody renting it and still having overhead expenses to cover like marketing, gas, car payments, and insurance.
It took about five months before we started seeing profit every month. After the rough start everything has been promising.
Can you tell our readers more about what you do and what you think sets you apart from others?
I originally moved to Austin, Texas for my music career and dreams. That’s what I was pursuing before all of this came to be, unfortunately I took a little break from music once I started this business, and will most definitely be going back to it once comfortable.
I’ve always had the entrepreneur mindset and work ethic of not working for somebody else. My first years down here I owned a music studio at the legendary Music Lab in south Austin.
Back home I’m most known for my music popularity. Also growing up I was a football star back in California, I played all the years of my life and ended up going to college for it. Once it didn’t work out how I planned I immediately started entrepreneurship and fell in love with the process.
I’m most proud of working towards something that I can call mine, I have always been this way and doubt that it’ll ever change.
What do you like best about our city? What do you like least?
My likes about this city is you can be yourself comfortably without having to worry about what others think about you. I also like the fact that most of the people I run into are very friendly and welcoming especially being from another state. There’s a lot of opportunity due to the fact that it’s one of the fastest-growing cities across the 50 states of America and I LOVE THAT. especially coming from a big city like Los Angeles which is pretty much already established in the business world.
I don’t have too many dislikes bout the city, but one thing I would change about it if I could would definitely be the bumpy roads and streets throughout some areas.
