Today we’d like to introduce you to Joshua Alderete
Hi Joshua, thanks for sharing your story with us. To start, maybe you can tell our readers some of your backstory.
During the pandemic, while the world slowed down, I found an opportunity to dive deeper into my passion—restoring and refurbishing drums. I’ve always loved the craftsmanship behind these instruments, and bringing old or worn-out drums back to life became more than just a hobby; it became a way to give back to the music community.
What started as a personal project quickly grew into Restored Drum Shop, a place where drummers could find beautifully restored instruments with history and character. Seeing the joy that a well-loved, revitalized drum set brings to musicians has been incredibly rewarding. Whether it’s helping a beginner find their first kit or giving a seasoned player a unique, vintage sound, this journey has been about more than just drums—it’s about the music, the people, and the stories behind every instrument.
Restored Drum Shop is a labor of love, built on the belief that every drum has a second chance to make music.
Would you say it’s been a smooth road, and if not what are some of the biggest challenges you’ve faced along the way?
It definitely hasn’t been a smooth road—restoring drums comes with its fair share of challenges. One of the biggest struggles has been dealing with drums that simply don’t cooperate. Some kits arrive in rough shape, with warped shells, stripped hardware, or missing pieces that are nearly impossible to find. There are times when a drum seems beyond saving, but I’ve learned to be patient, problem-solve, and get creative with repairs.
Another major challenge has been space. Drums take up a lot of room, and in the early days of Restored Drum Shop, I found myself running out of space quickly. Balancing a growing inventory while keeping a functional workspace was tricky, especially when working out of a small apartment. Over time, I’ve had to refine my setup, making sure I have enough room to work efficiently while still being able to showcase restored kits for musicians.
Despite these struggles, the passion for what I do keeps me going. Every challenge is a learning experience, and seeing a once-forgotten drum kit come back to life makes all the effort worth it.
Alright, so let’s switch gears a bit and talk business. What should we know about your work?
At Restored Drum Shop, I specialize in restoring and refurbishing drums, bringing old and worn-out kits back to life for musicians who appreciate both history and quality craftsmanship. Whether it’s finding the perfect sound for a vintage kit or giving a neglected drum set a second chance, my work is all about honoring the instrument and the music it creates.
Beyond restoration, I’m also deeply involved in music performance and education. I play drums and percussion professionally and lead my jazz band, Joshua Alderete & The Fellowship. Jazz has always been a huge part of my musical journey, and with this band, I get to collaborate with some truly incredible musicians, bringing fresh energy to classic and original compositions.
I also have a passion for teaching and work as a middle school band director, helping young musicians find their voice and develop their skills. Whether it’s performing, restoring instruments, or teaching, my goal is always the same—to share the joy of music.
I think people know me for my positive attitude toward life and music. I genuinely love what I do, and I believe that enthusiasm is contagious. What I’m most proud of isn’t just the drums I restore or the gigs I play—it’s the amazing musicians and students I get to create with. They bring just as much value to what I do as I hope to bring to them, and that sense of community is what makes this journey so rewarding.
Is there something surprising that you feel even people who know you might not know about?
One surprising thing that most people might not know about me is that I didn’t originally set out to start a drum shop—it all started as a personal passion project. During the pandemic, I just wanted to restore a few drums for myself and friends, but as I kept working, I realized how much joy it brought me (and others). What began as a side hobby quickly turned into Restored Drum Shop, and now I can’t imagine my life without it.
Another thing people might not know is that I’m just as passionate about teaching as I am about performing and restoring drums. While many know me for my jazz band, Joshua Alderete & The Fellowship, or for my work in drum restoration, my role as a middle school band director is just as important to me. Seeing young musicians grow and develop their love for music is one of the most rewarding parts of what I do.
Also, even though I spend so much time around drums, I love all kinds of percussion instruments—from congas to vibraphones to auxiliary percussion. If it makes a sound, I want to explore it!
