Today we’d like to introduce you to Justin Aursland
Hi Justin, we’re thrilled to have a chance to learn your story today. So, before we get into specifics, maybe you can briefly walk us through how you got to where you are today?
i moved to austin in march 2020 to further my clothing business, i got deeper into sewing my own garments and started working alongside other creatives here in austin. Trent and Avery, the owners of personal vintage, hired me to work a weekly market on south congress selling vintage clothing and a few things i made. after a year or so i was able to get my own booth at the soco makers market, and it developed over time to carry items i make for my brand as well as curated vintage clothing that i sell under the shop name “Rascals”. All the time i have been taking small batch commissions to make custom work with friends and other clients, denim repair and any odd jobs that involves sewing.
I’m sure it wasn’t obstacle-free, but would you say the journey has been fairly smooth so far?
I wouldn’t particularly say it had been a smooth road. i think the biggest struggle with any kind of freelance labor or running your own business is the inconsistency of sales. I’ve also had to learn how to give my life its own structure since i don’t work a traditional job or anyone relying on me to work a particular time or day. self motivating is probably the trickiest part of the situation.
Can you tell our readers more about what you do and what you think sets you apart from others?
i design and sew garments and accessories from scratch. i control every part of the process from the design of the patterns to the fabric sourcing and construction. Everything i produce is fully sustainable and zero waste. I also source and curate vintage clothing and sell clothing.
Is there any advice you’d like to share with our readers who might just be starting out?
I am self taught so i don’t feel like i have the credentials to be giving any kind of sewing advice but i will say if you want to get into clothing design the most important thing is to learn how to sew, learn how fabrics drape, learn different seams and pattern drafting, really study fashion.
