Today we’d like to introduce you to Liz Watts
Hi Liz, please kick things off for us with an introduction to yourself and your story.
My journey to becoming a therapist (mental health) began with my experiences as a musician. I play the violin, and music has been a major focus of my life since childhood. I have always struggled with performance anxiety (aka stage fright). As a violin teacher, I noticed that my students were having similar issues, but I had no idea how to help them. I started taking psychology classes at my local community college, enjoyed them so much that I continued with my studies all the way through to grad school. I graduated from St. Edward’s University in 2020 with a master’s degree in counseling. Post graduation, I have been working on the required 3000 hours for full licensure as a licensed professional counselor (LPC). I’m proud to say that I recently completed my hours! I have been working as a volunteer at Capital Area Counseling while building up my private practice, Liz Watts Counseling.
Can you talk to us a bit about the challenges and lessons you’ve learned along the way. Looking back would you say it’s been easy or smooth in retrospect?
My biggest obstacle has been my own imposter syndrome. I am certainly a work-in-progress! The silver lining is that I can relate to my clients on a personal level which helps build the client-therapist relationship.
As you know, we’re big fans of you and your work. For our readers who might not be as familiar what can you tell them about what you do?
I am a licensed professional counselor (LPC) in the state of Texas. I work with individual adults (ages 18+). I have a passion for working with people who have imposter syndrome, never feel good enough, have a harsh self-critic, and/or are perfectionists. I also have experience working with anxiety, depression and other mood disorders, grief and loss, relationship issues, life transitions, trauma, self-esteem, goal setting, and everyday life stress. I am also trained in EMDR. I am available for telehealth and in person sessions in Westlake. I offer affordable no-session-limit therapy as an alternative to insurance.
Are there any books, apps, podcasts or blogs that help you do your best?
I have many books that I recommend to clients. However, one book that struck a chord for me was “The Secret Thoughts of Successful Women: Why Capable People Suffer from the Impostor Syndrome and How to Thrive in Spite of It” by Valerie Young.
