Check Out Maira Montes’s Story

Today we’d like to introduce you to Maira Montes.

Hi Maira, we’re thrilled to have a chance to learn your story today. So, before we get into specifics, maybe you can briefly walk us through how you got to where you are today?
Originally from Chihuahua, Mexico,
I started dancing in primary school as part of the arts and culture program in our school. When I was around 12 years old I moved to El Paso Tx to learn English and continued my dance journey all through middle school and high school.

I was a Dance Major at The University of Texas at El Paso where I focused on modern and contemporary techniques.
At the age of 24 I moved to Los Angeles to train and pursue a career as a professional Dancer.

Since university I’ve been able to work for various Artist as a Dancer and or choreographer. Artists such as Elvis Crespo, Fey, Willie Nelson, Orville peck,
Belinda, Christian Nodal, and more.

Now I am based in Austin Tx where I teach out of well known local studios Go Dance Studio and Dance Austin

Since relocating to Austin I have expanded my knowledge and expertise to ballroom and social dance.
From private lessons to group classes I teach salsa, two step, west coast swing, Latin Fusion and many more!

I’m sure it wasn’t obstacle-free, but would you say the journey has been fairly smooth so far?
The biggest challenge I’ve faced as a professional dancer is having to prove myself constantly. The arts are not as highly recognized or valued as much as other careers, making it hard to make a living, especially in a popular city like Austin.

Appreciate you sharing that. What else should we know about what you do?
These days my focus around dance is creating and fostering community.
I love bringing people together through Dance.
I have been working on a few visual projects involving Dance, film and fashion that feature a diverse level of dancers ranging from age 18 to 70!

I believe that dance is for everyone!
Dance has a way of bringing people together in ways that I’ve never experience before.

Is there a quality that you most attribute to your success?
Perseverance and patience
