Today we’d like to introduce you to Parker Remig.
Hi Parker, can you start by introducing yourself? We’d love to learn more about how you got to where you are today?
We first had the idea to open an indoor golf simulator bar in early 2023. Parker had been in Austin for about three years at that time and knew there was opportunity in the growing golf scene. He brought on a high school friend, Bailey, and an old college roommate, Conner (whose wife was pregnant with their first child at the time, helping him come up with the company name). Parker also convinced his brother, Nolan, to move from Florida to run the day-to-day operations of the business.
We started looking for a space to rent and quickly realized we needed more money and had a lot to learn. A random conversation at the bank one day led us to start with the mobile golf simulator first. Parker was depositing a check when the bank teller asked about the name Daddy Shack and what we do, which led someone nearby to ask if we could bring our golf simulator to their corporate event. The team discussed it for a couple of days and then decided to go for it.
In August 2023, we had our first mobile golf simulator event with an employee appreciation day. We have continued to invest in and grow the mobile simulator business while building other features of the brand, such as custom club work and local golf events, which have led us back to taking the next step toward the original idea (which has also slightly evolved). In January of this year, we signed the lease for our first indoor golf club location at Howard Post in Pflugerville. The space is just over 4,000 square feet and will include four TrackMan simulator bays, a spacious lounge area, a comfort station, a club work station, a conference room, and a gym. We are excited to open Daddy Shack Golf Club to Austin golfers this summer!
I’m sure it wasn’t obstacle-free, but would you say the journey has been fairly smooth so far?
Definitely not a smooth road. The initial rush of opening a space quickly faded with the realization of how much we didn’t know and how in over our heads we were. Even a year into the mobile sim, we were close to hanging it up. We have been juggling Daddy Shack with our full time jobs for the past few years so it was a lot of stressful days and late nights. We eventually wised up and asked for help by bringing on college-aged interns (we are up to a team of 10!). We had hoped to achieve a couple years ago what we are now close to achieving, but what we’ve learned from the process and all along the way has resulted in some changes to our business plan that will hopefully pay off. Fortunately, our success in the mobile simulator space with a smaller operation has given us a strong foundation for the club.
Thanks for sharing that. So, maybe next you can tell us a bit more about your work?
Parker is a CPA that worked as a manager at Ernst & Young until recently joining Wilkinson Iron & Metal. Bailey works in the operating room as an engineer for Johnson and Johnson, but will be getting his full-time MBA at Texas McCombs in August.
Any advice for finding a mentor or networking in general?
For golfers, simply being involved in the Austin golf community has been huge. There are so many great people here building interesting things that we’ve been able to learn from. In general, attend events, join groups, and be thoughtful about what you want to pursue. Reach out to people doing what you’re interested in and show that you’re serious. Most people are more than willing to help. We certainly are if you’re interested in golf.
For business owners or entrepreneurs, reaching out to someone with a similar concept to bounce ideas off each other is always a great idea. Some people can get sharp elbowed with competition, but I believe the more you share the more you get back.
