Today we’d like to introduce you to Priscilla Stevenson.
Hi Priscilla, can you start by introducing yourself? We’d love to learn more about how you got to where you are today?
My mother created Taxi Mom 18 years ago because she needed a school transportation service for my brothers and I! As a recent graduate of St. Edward’s University, I saw the potential that our family business had in the Austin area. Since we grew up witnessing the success of Taxi Mom, my brothers and I each own a location. Taxi Mom offers a door-to-door subscription-based service. Each student has the same driver and the same route every day. We also have a mobile app that allows parents to be notified of their child’s trip and provides live tracking. I am the first Taxi Mom location to open in Central Texas. Since I opened Taxi Mom Austin during the pandemic, I noticed the financial struggles that families were up against. In early 2021, I co-founded Taxi Mom Families, a 501c3 non-profit that was formed to assist families who require financial assistance with school transportation. Every child has the right to safe transportation and I’m excited to expand my services to all that are in need.
Would you say it’s been a smooth road, and if not what are some of the biggest challenges you’ve faced along the way?
Since I opened Taxi Mom Austin during the pandemic, it has been very challenging. The struggle that I face the most is having to say the word no. It seems that I am the only child transportation company in the Austin area. Every day, I am getting calls from all surrounding areas of Austin and unfortunately, I cannot get to every child since Taxi Mom runs on a route that picks up the same kids every day and has the same driver.
Can you tell our readers more about what you do and what you think sets you apart from others?
My goal is to have an impact on the Austin community. As a for-profit business, we cannot forget to give back to our local communities. I am proud to also be a nonprofit founder. Since the establishment of Taxi Mom Families, over the past year, we have been able to provide assistance to 20 students in need of transportation throughout Texas. My favorite part of my job is the ability to relieve stressed-out parents and our Taxi Mom Austin kiddos!
Have you learned any interesting or important lessons due to the Covid-19 Crisis?
Yes, we are currently in a bus shortage which has left a lot of children without bus transportation. This year, Taxi Mom Austin has had many requests for service due to the bus shortage crisis. It feels great to relieve the parents that once depended on the school district for transportation. Parents love the fact that we are a door-to-door service, which means their child does not have to walk to and from the bus stop, especially during the winter months.
