Today we’d like to introduce you to Rafael Colon Hernandez
Hi Rafael, we’re thrilled to have a chance to learn your story today. So, before we get into specifics, maybe you can briefly walk us through how you got to where you are today?
I was born in Puerto Rico 🇵🇷 and raised in between Boston Massachusetts and the island. I had a shaky upbringing dealing with racism and abuse.
After a childhood of back and forth we settled in PR, I graduated HS in 1994 and began to study Pre Med and Microbiology. I also joined the Army Reserves in 1993 to start making my own money.
After about 3 years of college I needed to a change after living under drr my parents roof, so I went activity duty.
My career in the Army has spanned over three decades as a combat medic. I have deployed to Afghanistan and Iraq, lived in Germany for about 10 years and also during deployed in support of the 2017 Hurricanes in the carribeen
I retire this summer as a Command Sergeant Major and will settle down with my wife and son North of austin and continue to work as a Mortgage Broker, owner of 9 Line Mortgage a division of Fred Kelley Mortgage based downtown Austin
Alright, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
Growing up in between Boston and PR was a struggle never really laying down roots in either place.

I am proud of my heritage as a Veteran as well as Latino.
As a mortgage broker I am proud to assist Fred Kelley Mortgage as we allow Veterans to understand there VA Benefits while also helping everyone reach their home-buying goals. So in essence I’m proud to bring honor, trust, commitment to the Austin home-buying experience just like I have done across the globe as a soldier
Is there anything else you’d like to share with our readers?
In combat Medics like me earn the title DOC when they earn the trust of their infantry counterparts and combat soldiers. A 9 LINE brings them a sense of hope that if they are injured DOC will be there to provide life saving treatment.
