Today we’d like to introduce you to Sam- Owner Of Texas Climbing Adventures Brodnax
Hi Sam- owner of Texas Climbing Adventures, thanks for sharing your story with us. To start, maybe you can tell our readers some of your backstory.
I grew up in Austin and went to a private college prep high school called The Griffin School. It was there that I learned about Prescott College, a liberal arts school that had Adventure Education.
I saved money, bought gear and went on a 23 day backpacking trip for my orientation in the Prescott National Forest. That was my first outdoor experience. After that I knew I wanted to be an outdoor educator.
Four years later I received an Adventure Education degree, with a minor in Human Development, from Prescott College.
After climbing around Flagstaff AZ, river guiding, and receiving my AMGA (American Mountain Guide) Single Pitch Instructor certification in the Northwest, my wife and I decided to move our little family back to Austin,TX.
I went to work right away as an outdoor climbing guide for Texas Climbing Adventures and an instructor at Crux Climbing Center.
After guiding and instructing for 4 years the owner decided to move to Colorado and leave me in charge of the business.
I have been the owner now for three years. It has definitely been a transition becoming the owner of a small business vs just an outdoor educator and guide. I try my best to include my outdoor eduction into the rock climbing guiding service.
Creating a connection to nature through rock climbing is my underlying theme and goal with the business.
I’m sure it wasn’t obstacle-free, but would you say the journey has been fairly smooth so far?
Growth is definitely been a struggle. The ups and downs include, the weather being unpredictable and it being hard to put money into advertising. We have grown a lot in three years though. I have some new things coming on the horizon. I am hopeful and eager to see where I can take it.
Thanks – so what else should our readers know about your work and what you’re currently focused on?
I am a Husband, Father, climber, outdoor educator, and Single Pitch Instructor through the American Mountain Guides Association.
I specialize in teaching rock climbing.
I am known for being professional and fun to learn from, is what I hear from the climbers I have taught.
I am most proud of helping others to achieve their goals as climbing instructors by providing a guiding service to develop their skills. I am also proud of all of the climbers I have taught who take there education to other places and continue to connect to nature in other parts of the world through rock climbing.
My team and I have an attention to detail when it comes to safety and education. I have been able to attract guides and instructors who are truly there for the climbers experience and growth.
What are your plans for the future?
I am currently working on incorporating youth camps. I am also working towards taking a higher certification course within the AMGA. My goal is to become a provider and educator for instructors looking to make a career out of rock climbing guiding and instructing.
