Today we’d like to introduce you to Sophie Seng
Hi Sophie, it’s an honor to have you on the platform. Thanks for taking the time to share your story with us – to start maybe you can share some of your backstory with our readers?
I started my music journey in my hometown (Davis, California) when I was around 7, begging my parents for piano lessons. I played classical piano all through elementary school, then picked up the saxophone in middle school. I fell in love with that instrument, practiced my heart out, and majored in jazz at Cal State Northridge. Halfway through college (in around 2018) I felt called to start songwriting, so I returned to the piano and began writing my first album. Since then, writing, releasing, and sharing my music has been my passion.
After that first album I released two more EPs, played hundreds of shows, went on two US tours, and moved out to Austin to further pursue music!
Would you say it’s been a smooth road, and if not what are some of the biggest challenges you’ve faced along the way?
One of the main challenges I’ve faced in my music career is finding the right places and people to share my music with. I’ve always struggled to put my music into a box (genre-wise) and it has made it hard to find role models and paths to follow. I am passionate about making new and truly original music so I’m not planning on changing what work I produce, but it has been challenging forging my own way. I’m so grateful to have found a community of people who appreciate the unique music I make though, and I know this will all be worth it one day!
Thanks for sharing that. So, maybe next you can tell us a bit more about your work?
I am a singer-songwriter, saxophone player, producer, and performer. My main passion is to create a sense of shared humanity through music; to make songs that make you feel something.
The genre of my music is hard to categorize: my discography spans many genres such as folk, rock, jazz, experimental, and orchestral. The through-line of all of my work is honestly and vulnerability: each of my songs share my deep personal truth in hopes that it can connect with others.
I am most proud of my originality and persistence. I am yet to find another artist that does what I do, and I truly do believe in myself! I have been doing this for around 7 years now with no plans of stopping.
If we knew you growing up, how would we have described you?
As a kid I always loved music – my first musical endeavor (when I was around 5 years old) was to sing along with the birds. I tried to copy their little songs as best I could and I would sing them back to the trees. I have many fond memories of doing this while laying on the lawn at my grandparents’ house.
I have always been an extrovert – I love being around my loved ones. I grew up with a sweet community of neighbors, family, and friends that I will never take for granted. I spent a lot of time in nature and in community. Though no one in my immediate family does music, both of my parents are artists so they nurtured and encouraged my creativity throughout my childhood.
I was a pretty goofy kid (and am now a goofy adult) but I have always been quite serious about my passions. I practiced a lot growing up (piano, voice, and saxophone) and alway sought out ways to improve, things to learn, and goals to reach. I think little me would be proud of what I have done so far as an adult.
